Hi guys this site is great and lots of helpful folks. I have a 91 250 with a cummins and it is very loud. I know lots of you guys like the noise but I have some hearing loss and I'm concerned about more with the truck. Plus I live in a tight neiborhood. What can I put on the truck for an exhaust to quiet the truck down and not kill preformance too much? Is there other things I can do to quiet the truck down. I like the truck a lot and don't want to part with it. It was my fathers truck and when he passed away I started to drive it. I have 87,000 miles on it and its runnning strong so I just want to quiet it and keep driving it for a long time to come. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks HHG

1st, what does the truck have on it now? I had a friend of mine put a 4 inch exhaust on mine with a straight through muffler. It sounds very close to stock until you get into it, about 15 pounds of boost and it starts to wake up the neighbors on the next block. I am extremely pleased with it. Incidentally, they say a 4 inch exhaust wont fit on the 1st gen. 4wd trucks because of tight quarters with the transfer case, I'm here to tell you it will fit, but you would have to find an exhaust guy not only one step above expert, but that has the patience to run pipe around the transfer case with about 3/8 of an inch clearance. Where do you live, if you're not too far from Montrose CO I could hook you up with him.

Here is more detail

I just got a call from my mechanic and I have a large hole in the pipe just in front of the muffler. The current system is a stock exhaust system and I need to do something quick because I'm leaving for a hunting trip next week. From what I have been told that the quietest is going to be the stock exhaust but I was hoping that was not true. It is also a 4x4 truck. When you say that you get into it I assume you mean stepping on it for a lot of power and it gets real noisy. When you are driving it normal and around town how is it? When I drive on the highway I can get it up to 70 - 75 mph and I feel like I'm dragging an anchor with me. Any suggestiosn would help. I live in MA but thanks for the referal wish I did live out that way. Thanks HHG

BD sells the 3. 5" kit from about 1ft infront of the muffler and out the back for about $450 Cdn. Performance and an exhaust fix all in one. I am currently considering the same system...

Anyone have this system on?? What's it like???

I've been using the 3. 5 inch mandrel bent BD system for about 5 1/2 years now. I have not found it any louder than the original stock exhaust system. It does allow "better breathing" since the piping is all mandrel (radius) bent which gets rid of the crushed sections and the restrictions that they cause. I don't know if you'll see any "holy cow" performance difference since they tweaked my injector pump when the exhaust was done. I did see some difference due to both factors. After all if it breaths better you can add a bit of fuel, which they did.

One thing though. I was under the impression that the whole system had a 5 year warranty. It did not. I needed the muffler changed around year 4 ( I think it was about $130. 00 installed) and it was not part of the piping warranty.

Just a missunderstanding I'm sure. All in all I'm satisfied with the price, product, result.

Put something... Carpeting, Ice and water shield for roofs, Dynamat... on the bare metal behind the seat. It'll help out a lot with the noise. I did it on my 98. 5 and couldn't believe the difference, but I was running with just a downpipe at the time, it ended just after the cab. It's pretty cheap and easy and cuts down on the noise inside the cab.

BD or Banks

Well guys question for you. If you had to choose the BD 3. 5 exhaust or the Banks Stinger 3 in. exhaust. Which on would you choose and why? I would like to know which is better performance and which is quieter??? CumminsAholic

thanks for the tip on the back seat. Good point. HHG

Larger is better

I have not tried those 2 exhaust units. But either I'm sure is going to be better then stock because of the restrictions in the stock system near the rear axle. I would have to vote on LARGER is better. Because if you start bombing your truck, you will need larger in the long run. I had a 3. 5 " system installed by a typical shop with a DynoMax muffler and I am very happy with it. I did notice the difference right away with the turbo spooling up and down faster. It was a little louder but not as bad when running without a muffler for a month. it had more power like that but didn't like the sound bouncing off the walls and buildings. Total install cost was only around $200. 00 or so if I recall.
