NEED TO KNOW TO MAKE A 92 START CHARGING AGAIN.

THE ALT IS GOOD AND THE ECM IS BRAND NEW 7/18/02 AND STILL WILL NOT CHARGE IT DOES NOT HAVE A EXTERNAL VOLT/REG IT IS IN THE ECM.

THAT IS WHY I BOUGHT A NEW ONE. . I CAN NOT FIGURE IT OUT TO SAVE MY LIFE. . ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. I HAVE EVEN CHECKED SOME OF THE FUSEABLE LINKS,ALSO THE A/C QUIT WORKING AT THE SAME TIME,AND THE transmission STARTING ACTING UP AS WELL. .

BUT NOBODY KNOWS WHAT THE PROBLEM IS... ... ... .

PLEASE HELP THANKS

Does the 1st gen have a power dist. center under the hood like the 2nd gen? If so, verify that there is power to each of the power 'busses' when the key is on. If not, you may have a problem with the ignition switch or the wiring to it, such that not everything that needs to be powered is getting power when the key is turned on.

2nd gens have a 140A fuse protecting the alternator. If the 1st gen has one, that could have blown.

2nd gens have relays in the PDC, some of which control power to accessory/run circuits. If the 1st gen has such relays, one of them may have failed.

These are just a few places to start looking. But once you find a fault, it may not be the *source* of the fault; you have to trace back even further to ensure that things are working properly on *both* sides of the fault. In a sentence, you may find yourself tracing the problem all the way back to the ignition switch.

Good luck,

i thought that '93 was the first year foe the regulator to be the ecm before that it was a silver box just under the cowl in the center right above the engine

please correct me if i am wrong it sure wont be the first time

My '90 gasser D-150 had the V. regulator in the ECM also as it fried one night while 50 miles from the house.

It was not a pleasant trip, but made it home before the battery went completely dead.

I'd have the battery tested first, as a couple of dead cells can do very strange things to a charging system.

On 92's the ECM is the controller for the alternator. There are a couple of fusible links that may be your problem. The first is the main one in the alternator / battery wire it is located below the hood hinge on the drivers side. It looks like a heavy black wire feeding into a junction of 5 or 6 other wires, you should see a dark green wire with "10 GA Hypalon" stenciled on it. That is the one that connects the Alternator to the battery. In that same junction you should also see a orange wire marked "20 GA Hypalon" that is the feed to the clutch on the A/C compressor.

If the voltage regulator is in the PCM (was called somethhing else way back in 91) the system should be similar to the 2nd generation.

Then you should have a battery temp sensor/asd relay, engine speed sensor and of course more fuses and relays in pdc.

If this is the case check these components out and their related components ( wires/connectors).

no charge

I dont know of the 92's But in the 2nd gen there is a small plastic fuse by the drivers door post that is independent of the under hood fuses that will pop . -- I think as i remember it is a 5 amp??? but you will notice when you start the eng part of your dash will not work--I think one of the items is the tach... . Start the eng-turn every thing on and check all the inter-cab fuses ...
