I am posting this for a friend. Here is the exact problem she is having with her 3500 1996 Cummins

Has anyone had a problem with a fusible link between the ignition and clutch safety switch. Have tried everything else and cannot find the problem. . Have our mechanics stumped also.

Thanks!

What problem ?
There is power or not , sometimes you can with a meter hooked up try stretching the fusible link while watching the meter , it should not stretch & the meter should not lose power .
I think a problem needs to be stated 1st , what is happening / not working , when customers would come in after trying to solve the problem them selfs , they think at the point of where there at [ half of there own diagnosis ] making it hard to help , start at the beginning [ we weren't there ] even in a shop a tech can have problems , and a fresh mind [ different tech ] will help , but they need to start at the beginning , not where the other left off with all his ideas , then they both end up in the same place .

I only have an after market mnual on 96, it show a 10 amnp fuse that feeds the ign. switch start position, it is listed as fuse #9. I don't see a fuse to the clutch switch. Also there shows to be a 40 amp to the starter relay feed, I assume that is a fusible link. bg

roperteacher, looking at 96 service manual there is no fusible link between ilgnition switch and clutch switch.

Igniton switch in start position sends power to clutch switch, the clutch swtich then sends power to starter relay.

Pulling out starter relay out, female pin towards battery has power to it supplied from PDC, female connector towards engine is power from clutch switch, femal pin towards fender is ground, female pin towards firewall sends power to starter solenoid when power from clutch closes a swtich inside of starter relay.

There is a fusible link going to fuel shut off realy, located on edge of cowl (larger one).

Tommorow I will check the book out by testing the female relay pins ( I have checked them out before but it has been along time).

OK the female pin towards engine is ground, which means the female pin toward fender is the power wire from the ignition and clutch.

You can use a solid metal wire (house wire) and put one end in female pin towards battery, the other end in the female slot toward firewall that will crank the starter over. If you want it to start have ignition in "run" position and push the rod to fuel shut off solenoid up and do the above.
