Plexiglass

I am trying to build my own intake system. I want to make a torque tube , intake filter box & use the AEM dry flow filter. I want to make the box out of 1/4 inch plexiglass. Does anybody know what temps the plexiglass is good for? Will it hold up under the hood? I know it will be much hotter in the summer and I don't know what the under hood temps are. Oo.

Plexiglass will usually withstand about 140* to 200* before it starts distorting.



In most cases, the area under the hood where your stock air box is located will not get that hot as the truck has enough air-flow to keep temps lower.



Exceptions would of course being anything that would produce rapid heat build up with insufficient air flow (dragging , sled pulling , dyno runs , burn-outs :-laf or long uphill runs towing Oo. ).



If you intend to form or shape the air box I would recommend that you use a cast plexiglass as it has no stresses and is easier to form than extruded plexiglass. Also, if possible, try to use a Hydrogen torch flame as they will not soot the plexiglass (very clean-burning flame).



If you are building a basic square/rectangular box then use the extruded plexiglass as it will take a little more heat.
