0299, anyone ever find a fix?

I just had a friend call me and told me a plug on the side of His CP3 blew out. He has an 03. He called an injection pump shop and they told him this is a common thing and they see it all the time. He said there are 3 plugs on them and the one on the side came out and he lost a lot of fuel.

Has anyone else heard of this or had it happen to them?

I haven't heard of it either, and if Bob 4x4 and Underwood haven't even heard of it, it's not too common on these trucks. I too would like to see a pic of the offending plug just so I know what to look for if I have an issue. Overall I think the cp3 has been pretty solid on both stock and modded trucks.

Attached is a photo of a cutaway of a CP-3. There are actually 6 plugs - two per pumping chamber. 4 of them are clearly visible in the photo.

I figure the only way to "pop" one is if the threads are compromised (mechanically or metallurgically), or if the pump pressure is WAY too high.

I can't imagine it would be very common for these to pop out. This is the first I've ever heard of it.

I haven't heard or seen it but the cp3 gets used in many vehicles including MBZ

His is a later built 03 cummins srw 3500 6 speed and has 140k miles on it with no warranty left and previous dealers who tried to fix it just blew him off. But he was a Hard core Ford man who came to the cummins side and has had a but whooping time with it so far. He has been plagued with injector and pump problems with it in recent months with poor dealer trouble shooting. He has little money and had a used pump and injectors put in it from a wrecked 04 a month ago and now this happened. The dealers putzed for months trying to fix his hard start problem and changed the CP3 and some sensors and the transfer pump and still didn't fix it and then his warranty ran out so thats when he put the pump and injectors in it from an 04. It cured his problems but smoked really heavy after that according to him.

The injection pump shop told him there were 3 plugs they see pop out 1 on each side and 1 on bottom he said the one on the side came out of his and pumped 1/4 tank of fuel on the ground. I didn't look at mine but he said it looks like a soft plug. But the pic above definately shows a screw in style unless the cut away portion has that type of plug in it. .

This is the type of guy that bad luck follows full time.

He told me he just went to the bank and took out a loan for brand new stock injectors and CP3 today. I had him call Bob wagner to see what Don at F1 could do for him and II and they both scared him off with there prices and told him that his cores would most likely be shot. So he decided to go with brand new stock bosch stuff from the local Pump shop.

Wicked Diesels had the info

Here is a reply by Wicked Diesels from another site I posted this on.

When a plunger (one of three) sticks in the bore of the CP3, it spits the parts out. Pieces hit the access plugs and knock them out. The pump is most likely killed. Several things can cause this to happen, generally it is due to one of the check balls (discharge)not reseating properly. When this happens, fuel at high pressure is re-introduced for pressurization. It can not be further pressurized so the bottom of the plunger breaks and gets spit out of the pump. A pluger can also seize or become lodged from dirt or debris. Once the pieces come out, she is done for.

I have one that did the same thing. It was the top pump on a dual setup. With 30psi of supplied pressure I probably lost 3-4 gallon of fuel all over everything. From the back doors to the tailgate were covered with fuel and you could see the trail I left on my way to the shop to fix it.

It's not the plugs in the pics. It's the 3 freeze plugs (one in each valley). They're just pressed in and when mine blew out I dissembled the pump and it looks like a bomb went off inside. All 3 plungers are junk, springs are broke and the cam is trashed. Anyone want to buy a "slightly" used Dmax pump?:-laf
