I just put the Lucas injectors in my truck and am having difficulty.

I like the power increase even though I have the power screw on the pump turned down(out) to keep the egt down (1225 max unloaded going uphill, 1100-1150 on flat ground w/26lbs of boost)

But I don't like the "haze" at idle. I followed Piers recommendations of 1. 5mm timing and using the . 060" washers(they were actually . 063-. 064) and still I have the "haze" and get a small cloud at startup.

Is there anything else I should try before I call and worry Piers?

Thanks,

David

I have the same smoke issue. I also have a rough idle I can't seem to get rid of. I have put in the . 020" washers and set the timing up past the 1. 5 mark. I don't know where it is now. I need to go to Piers and have him check the ballance on these injectors to see if that is causing my rough idle and lopeing.

I love the power but I wonder if it will pass the fresh breath test. Maybe after I do some more work to it I can get a handle on the smoke.

good luck to us

I don't have the rough idle problem. The only idle problem that I have(other than the smoke) is that the farther out you turn the power screw the lower the idle gets. (a real PITA) My truck actually idles smoother now than it did yesterday. I also adjusted the valves while I had it down.

I really really liked the power with the screw turned in but even after adjusting the "smoke screw" I still had a good sized grey cloud when I put my foot in it and I had to watch my egts.

I found a solution that works for me!

I adjusted the idle speed to a little over 700rpm with the transmission in drive and the ac on. (the glovebox manual says the idle should be b/w 700 and 800 rpm)

This almost totally eliminated the "haze" at idle.

I am getting a little smoke at WOT but I may live with that as I really don't want to mess with the diaphram.

All in all, I am very happy with my "new" truck performance.

Now on to those pesky cowl cracks... ... ... ... .

I also have the 'haze' symptom. Piers thinks going to the 20 thou washers will help.

We're going to try that in mine first chance I get.

I also think he may have done that (not sure) in nascar mark's truck.

It all seems related to the spray angle and "large sac" style injector.

Bob.

Nope.

No one but me has ever worked on my engine. Only DTT has worked on the truck when they rebuild the transmission.

When i bought the POD's from Piers, i installed with the washers that was on the injectors. It did come with injectors washers in the install kit but i haven't tried them.

You guys don't like a little smoke ? I only get smoke when I start up and when a floor it:cool: BUT I save the big black clouds for simple but effective entertainment factor. Ever had a rice burner pull up next to you with the radio so loud you can't hear yourself think, let alone here your own radio playing ? My tail pipe usually lines right up with their drivers window, want to guess what happens when I lug the Cummins down ? Rice burner gets tinted windows real fast:D

Crewcab, you are a bad boy.

I have an automatic so I have to stand on it to remove all their oxygen. he he he

I too have the auto and even when I stand on it from take off I just get a small cloud or sometimes none at all. I have the power screw adjusted out to the point that I can see 1300deg going uphill at wot and still can't spin the tires from a dead stop. I turned the smoke screw 2 turns (CW) in from where I started(before PODs) and don't see much difference in my launches.

Don't get me wrong my launches are MUCH stronger than before but still no tire smoke. (I think that my auto trans is stealing a good bit of my power)

XGoldman,

When I had the POD's put in, even my stock transmission would "light em up".

Things to consider:

Do you have taller tires?

What rear end ratio are you running?

Is your transmission starting to get tired or slip?

How's your boost #'s ?

Have you had a full trans. service and a line pressure increase?

1300*F is right up there. At those temps you should be generating some decent HP/Torque.

I top out at about 26psi/1100*F at WOT in OD.

I can also light up the rubber fairly nice, either from a stop or a rolling start.

bob.

After 307k miles even though it has been well maintained, I am sure that this trans is a little tired. But, according to my tiny tach, I am still turning the same rpms at the same speeds(no additional slippage?). I have the 3:54 gears and stock tires.

Maybe I need to adjust the smoke screw in some more. On flat ground at wot I see about 1225* and I am wastgated to 26lbs of boost.

I am running 16-265s Michelins with my 5 speed, and I see two patches of rubber behind me when I floor it in 2nd,3rd, & 4th:--) and I still need to turn up the pump, and adjust the smoke screw. Its lots of fun but hell on the tires.

Spinning the trires? Well I have a posi and there is about 75 feet of rubber in front of my house. And my wife said if I did that again she is going to take my truck away. [fat chance] I have 285's on mine.

I went to the test and tune at S. I. R. friday and my best time was 15:80 sec at 84 mph. Not bad but I'm going to get more. And my auto was done by me and the torque converter is a stock replacement. I just let it shift itself.

I quess I'm off topic here but I thought I'd share.

I've got a 5 speed, 3. 54's, 285's, open diff, done about everything except injectors, and those tires grip the road like stink on I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER. They don’t even start to think about letting loose in 2nd, let alone 4th (crewcabdiesel). I dynoed at BD this spring and had 203hp at the rear wheels. That was before the BHAF, 4" exhaust, rpm increase, and diaphragm adjustment. Maybe my technique of rapidly depressing the "go" pedal is lacking something.

Mike

All I can tell you is I floor it, and there is two black streaks of rubber behind me, now I am not talking smoking tires(too much smoke out of the trail pipe to tell) and I can't hear the tires squealing over the Cummins and I have a 172 inch wheel base. But there is a definite coalition between WOT and tread reduction of my new Michelins    . I can get as 24-26lbs of boost with a 16cm turbo and the PODS with the injection pump turned down. As for the Dino, truck tested out a 196hp and 670 foots lbs at the wheels, note that the truck was NOT up to full operating temp. and later I have heard that the dino at Thunder was almost 20% lite on the numbers that it was showing . But down to brass tacks, IF you don’t believe it, come on over for a ride ! ;)

Kyle

PS

THANKS AGAIN PIERS !!!
