Just for fun, let's try a new poll. This question has been on my mind quite a bit lately given the availability of a "proper" automatic transmission with the 6. 7L trucks. Based on what you are currently driving, please vote for one of the following:

My 08 is less then 2 weeks old and has 1200 miles on it runs like a top not a flinch as of yet ran it up hwy 99 today at higher then posted speed and still averaged 14. 6 mpg on my way up to Manteca area and back tomorrow . My first diesel was a 93 motor and it ran just as good . I just hope that dodge fixed the troubles they had with the 07. 5 trucks with the 6. 7 I guess we will see .

We've got both on the driveway, and Id take a 6. 7 g56 over the 68rfe. But i dont think I could ever sell the 5. 9/nv5600. I'd really like to see dodge step up and bring back H. O. for m/t trucks, not derated ones:-{}

If I was in the market for a new truck I would get the 6. 7L with an Auto. Because all of the new emissions, I don't think my new truck will see the bombs my 03 will.

I have three 5. 9's, all with various standard transmissions. Cummins and manual transmissions are like "bread and butter":)

"NICK"

Having driven several different vehicles with different engine/transmission combinations over the years I can state unequivocally I spill less coffee with an automatic.

I test drove a 6. 7 auto and it does drive and shift nice. The 5. 9 auto just didn’t feel as nice on the test drive. The sales man filled my wife’s head full of crap about how the ONLY difference in the 5. 9 and the 6. 7 was the bore and stroke (no other differences). It got to the point where I told the sales guy “if you don’t find the 5. 9 auto that meets my needs I will go to another dealer to find one”. He quickly got the picture and started working in the direction I wanted him to. My next task was to reprogram the wife back to the condition that I had her programmed before visiting the dealer (only a 5. 9, or we wait a few years till the bugs are worked out). Two days later I drove off with a 2007 5. 9 auto. One week later I dropped it off at Rips for the long overdue transmission work. After a billet input, triple lock converter, valve body, etc the truck was transformed into a dream machine. Coupled with a Smarty the truck feels like it shed about 5,000 lbs and performs like our beloved E55. My advice to friends and family is “get the 5. 9 now while supplies last”. I believe the 6. 7 is a great truck, but I wonder if the potential to modify will ever catch up with the pre 2007 emission vehicles. I am very happy with my 5. 9 auto with Rips transmission mods.

Same reason I rushed out to buy my 5. 9 2007. I knew the supplies were dwindling of the 5. 9 with all of its refinements and not much emission crap. When they are gone, they're GONE

I loved my 01. 5 with the built DTT trans and mods but I think I like my '07, 5. 9, G56, 4X4 better. :D

This poll is not a reflection of the market. I think 90% are automatics.

I can tell you that when I was looking for a used diesel truck that the Dodges w/manauls were a lot more plentiful than the other two manufacturers(about 20% manuals/80% Autos). There were at least 10 manual Dodges for every manual Chevy.

Having owned an 01 auto..... briefly. The only thing i miss is the rattle of the 24v ! I love rowing thru the gears... ! (control freak) since 93". nv5600 till i die !!!!

Love my NV5600 for me to drive(can get a bit tiring in rush hour),next one will be an auto though for the Mrs to be able to drive too. I"ll keep the 01 for me "only",----the best part is when going to our place at the lake, once i hit the highway and drop it into 6th---it stay there until i have to turn off the highway(unless traffic condition dictate different). :D:D:D

Now make a poll on what you wish you'd bought. Not really unhappy with the auto, but if I had it to over again I"d have probably gone manual. At least I can still shift the jeep.

Poll: 5.9L/6.7L Auto vs Manual

It took me many months to look for a new 06 G56 manual MC with the options I wanted. It was well worth the wait:-laf.

Although I voted this is kind of a mute poll.
I don't know the ratio but I'll bet the production of auto's vs manuals is at least 20 to 1 or more.

If some one had the factory information then you would have your answer.

There is no way the ratio is 20 to 1 in a Dodge with the Cummins. It is easily that in a Ford or Chevy diesel, at least the most recent ones with 5/6 speed autos.

As good as I think the 48re is, Dodge obviously had a stigma surrounding the auto trans behind the Cummins left over from the second gen trucks. This lead many buyers to stick with the manuals even though the auto became a reliable option finally. I think the demographic for CTD buyers is also different from that of Ford or Chevy, especially Chevy which is an overgrown car IMO. CTD buyers more often than not NEED a TRUCK to do some hauling with. The others end up being run abouts in town, the new bigger better badder SUV for soccer moms and the like. Those will have autos, working trucks more often will have manuals.

I did run four 48re trucks though, two as dedicated work trucks for a few years. I was always pretty happy with them, they worked flawlessly but I am a convert now with a 5. 9/G56. I like the way this combo works sooooo much better, especially living in a mountainous region of the US.

When I look at the dealers new inventory, I see more like a 50/50 split. It may be indicitive of my rural area full of farmers, ranchers and a bunch of construction workers. Maybe in the cities it is a different mix. Can anybody get the actual numbers from Dodge? I would bet on third gens it is something closer to 3 autos for every 2 manuals.
