I started my truck for the first time since a facelift that started two years ago and during the reassembly I used polyurethane bushings and mounts everywhere. Starting with the engine mounts, the transmission mounts and finally the cab mounts. What was once the smoothest Cummins I had, is now vibrating quite objectionable at idle. I also upgraded the injectors and I did put a new hamonic balancer on it. Has anyone else experienced this with polyurethane? And if so do they soften a bit or do I have to go back to rubber?

Poly is known for it's strength not reducing NVH. You may notice a small drop in nvh with time but it will never be what rubber is

Yeah, feels pretty good doesnt it? :D

The 1990 was converted also to engine and transmission mounts. I can tell there is a car behind me as I can see the headlights but I can not for the life of me ID the vehicle brand or model! :-laf

OK, OK, I'll toughen up. I suppose if I want smooth I should get a Caddy. There has got to be a reason I have been driving these things for over twenty years. I guess I also forgot I've got my new 3200 spring in the pump, I'll just keep it stretched. Thanks

LOL Exactly. Gen 1s were not exactly known for smooth... . ;)

Thats what those soft gen 3/4 guys need. We first gen people are tough! :D:-laf

... My wife calls me another 5 letter word..... c-h-e-a-p. :D

Why buy a new, $50k truck when my $5k truck gets better mileage and has less problems? Okay, so the paint's peeling, a fender's crushed, and the door lock is worn out on the driver side, BUT I don't have to slaughter cattle that get within 10 feet of it!! Besides, it'd take me a month to get all my tools, ammo, and various other personal items that have been lost in the truck found and out... ...

OH, and your topic... . Yes, the mounts transmit a lot of harmonics to the frame, but you won't wallow the rear ones out around the plates... . Not sure if they're that much better being so much tougher. :( Not sure how that will translate into vibrational damage to body panels in time... ... .

Not cheap, HHhuntitall! Its being frugal!;)

Am I the only one that drives these trucks cause I like the vibration, the looks, and also just a general love of the 1st gens? :D

Pastor Bob would be taking away many HP bonus points in this thread if he was still here! ;)

Of Course not, BSchwarzli, I love sitting at an angle to the steering wheel in my '93 with the driver side bucket seat, jammed into the left side of the cab, next to the door:rolleyes:. With the gear shift just out of reach fer us short fellers when shifting into 5th gear:eek:. What really jacks my jaws is when the seat belt locks up as you throw yerself forward to hit that #5 gear:mad:. Snapped yer neck and ya have to throw yer butt into the door and hook yer left Glutius maximus over the arm rest and take another swing at it#@$%!. Lucky fer me that I seldom have the opportunity to shift that high as most of the roads around here are 30-45 MPH:rolleyes::eek:! What really gets me is swallowing a $1300 dental crown as I take the short cut over gap road, into town, in 4X4 with the road washboarded like a continuous, speed bump for 5 miles:-{}! Yep, I LOVES My 1st GenOo. :D!

GregH

Hmm, was just thinking about how I would explain it to Dave Valentine that I wore out the driver side arm rest with my butt. I must be a High AXXed home boy:-laf!

GHam, some of those speed bumps look like moose when you go by at 40mph... . :D Glad I didn't get one of those with the wife's Durango!!! Might not have taken it was well as the old '93!!!!! You just like the vibration to loosen up yer back!!! :D No need for a chiropractor.....

And I said my wife called me cheap. I like the term frugal, myself. Effecient works good for me, too. :D

:-lafHHhuntitall, You are a FUNNY FELLER!:-laf

Ya gotta watch the speed bumps cause the "county mounties" keep tellin' me that "just cause they are there dont mean that ya gotta go fast so's ya just hit the tops of 'em".

AND! There are MOOSE up thereOo.! Them aint speed bumps! Never seen speed bumps with head gear, a bell and rubber lips that suck the leaves offn a willow bush from 50' away:D!

Man! If my truck was built like a MOOSE, I could walk under it ta do an oil change and grease job:-laf

GregH

Wow. You two is smokin' tings you should ant be. :-laf

Too funny..... :D

Awww, it's just all the exhaust fumes I inhale in my shop... ... That, and maybe licking the carbon off the rear, right fender... ... .

At least my shorts aren't on video... ...

:D Miss me, yet? :D

Stiffer is not always better. Most of the Polyurethane parts are way to stiff. polyurethane also tends to squeak a lot. A lot of time and effort went into developing the stock mounts. The main goal was to keep the vibration down to a minimum. Your vibration problem will go away if you replace the polyurethane with stock mounts.

Another thing to consider is that vibration is not just "fun". It can destroy metal such as alternator brackets, exhaust connections, etc in short order so be careful out there.

:D Yep, but the stock mounts were never intended to support 380hp and 910ftlbs... ... :D The old 440 Maxiwedge I had would eat 'em like cool-whip!! (might have had something to do with the sasquatch on the throttle... ... that truck spent more time with the secondaries open then it did without... . ) "I like it, I love it, I want some more of it... ... torque, that is..... HH, ya gotta understand:D! Your trip up Gap was AFTER the County ran the grader up and down that stretch of gravel road:rolleyes::-laf!

After a month 'er two, cloud bursts and high speed chases, that 5 miles is continuous washboards, some of then deep enough ta swaller a VW BUS:cool:!

You got the Guest version with yer Durango;)!

BSchwarzli,

The onlyist thing that gets smoked around here is Bicyclistas that take up the entire lane:rolleyes:. Thats when Overfueled UGLY passes 'em in a cloud of Black smoke and a screamin' turbocharger:-laf. MAN! What a RUSH!:-laf:DOo. There aint no flies on Ugly when passin' on a 10% grade at high altitude!

Good thing, too!! My wife'd had my Obama if I'd shaken the windows out of her car!!! :-laf We see a lot of them washboard roads out West. In a county the size of Rhode Island, and a population of only about 900, the county roads can get pretty bad, what with the county not wanting to spend money on fuel, the 4 grader operators being a little overworked, and the oilfield running all over the place... ... . Especially seeing as how we're a dry county, and the nearest beer stores is 40 miles in any direction... ... :{ Yeah, I've created my fair share of cowling cracks on my old Dodges!!! We don't see any moose, though..... Just the occasional Angus bull... . :D

Greg

Yes. Now THAT is what smoke was designed for! :-laf

..... AND TRAIN HORNS!!! WHOOO-WHOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

The truck was NEVER intended to support those #'s either ! Come to think of it... Neither was the engine block .
