Thanks, TDR Staff
Got my 10-22 back from my brother and it fits my son well so I am going to get him started on it. The rear sight is broken so I need to fix it.

My son has poor eyesight His vision with lenses is correctable to only 20-80 or 20-100 he also suffers from a nystagmus depth perception and peripheral issues along with light sensitivity and color blindness. While he can see colors he has a problem with contrast, he has a problem seeing the difference of things that are similar is shade. any suggestions? A laser would probably work good for him but I would like to try more conventional optics first

Kenny,

I teach firearms full time for a large LE agency here in So Cal. You might try a light gathering front sight on that Ruger. Something along the lines of a fiber optic front sight. My next choice in the optic line would be the EOTECH. PM me if you have more questions.

Best Regards,
Jon

I was thinking of the red dot style sight but am not sure how it would work with his nystagmus. I sold my aimpoint 20 years ago and cant remember if eye movement affected the point of impact. The aim point web site says there double lens system eliminates paralax Maybe I will shoot them an email

Thanks

Like your son, I have had to deal with color blindness and light sensitivity along with my poor vision all my life. My eye Dr. was able to come up with a pair of glasses that I use specifically for hunting/shooting. They do not look like traditional shooting glasses, but rather have a more smoke colored lense. I can't remember the name of them right off, but they have made a huge difference for me, especially with object definition. It might be worth giving his Dr. a call and see if he is familiar with a similar product and if they would be compatable with you son's prescription.

He uses the transitions lenses to cut down on the glare (when I can get him to wear them) His Dr has never mentioned any other type. I would really appreciate it if you could ask your Dr the name the next time your in contact with him/her

Kenny, Is seeing shapes a problem for him? I recently installed an Advantage Tactical Sight on my Glock. They also make them for shotguns and rifles, as well as other handguns.

They take a unique approach to aiming and let your natural ability and inclination (Gestalt principle) to mentally "complete the shape", in this case: a pyramid, to make aiming fast and instinctual while also opening up your view of the target.

They come with 5 different bright colored inserts for both the front and rear sights so you can choose the ones that work best for you. Mix 'n match or both the same. Your choice.

I have now completed two shooting sessions with them on my Glock (@ 300 rounds per session) and I am liking them more and more. I have no misses side-to-side anymore. I only have a tendency to sometimes pull my shot low to deal with and that is not the sights or gun, it is just me when I get sloppy.

The above link puts you to the page where you can preview the sight picture in different colors. I find I can use mine accurately even when it gets too dark to distinguish colors as long as I can distinguish shape, which takes very, very little light.

Mr. Nasef was extremely prompt and helpful in his personal replies to my inquiries. If he does not yet make a 10/22 sight, it may be worth asking him about it as they are constantly adding new models.

Good luck to your son, Kenny. I'm sure he'll stick with it until he finds what works. Is there any chance of laser eye correction in the future? They seem to perform miracles these days.
