poor milage 6.7

Hi, I hava a 2001 2500 with the 24 vlave engine ,i wan tot trade it on a new 3500 cab&chassis 3500 but i`m told that the milage on the new trucks is terrible, i get 20 mpg on highway with my 24 v. . Thanks.

Just One Opinion

IMHO most of the mpg posts you are seeing now are irrelevant because (1) few of these trucks have 30-40M miles on them, and (2) those 07. 5's that likely have the most miles on them may still have "debugging" problems that the software of every new generation of electronic engines presents.



I don't give a hoot what anybody says, it will take 30-40M miles to really know what we all have in our engines regarding mpg Meantime, concentrate on what the 08's and newer have to offer over the others (very sound 6 speed auto transmission with manual override, jake brake, power and some creature comforts) and make your decision.



These 08 trucks are NOT going to get 20-22 mpg empty, but I think they will eventually come within 2-3 mpg of that if they are driven sensibly & once they are broken in. AND if they do that, I will be satisfied that CTD & Dodge hit a home run.



Have I told you that I love my 08 Megacab? BTW mine has approx 4500 mi on it and the overhead will be around 16 mpg OTR. I haven't even bothered to check it manually yet ... way way too early for that.

Not terrible, but not great

The mileage out of mine... with 15k miles on the clock... (of which 4k miles were dragging 10k lbs in an 8. 5x24' enclosed car hauler and another 4k miles hauling around nearly 4k lbs of stuff in addition to a truck camper)... isn't terrible but isn't great either.



If I am unloaded, on the freeway for an entire tank and keep it at 72 or less... I seem to now get about 17. 5 mpg (hand calcualated). I have the 6 spd auto in a 3500 SRW quad cab 4x4 short bed with 3:73? gears and stock wheels/tires. With the TC in the bed of the truck and on the freeway... I average 12-14. 5... but that was with nearly running close to 11k total weight when my truck seems to weigh about 7k empty.



What I do love is the power. Fantastic... and the 6 spd auto with the exhaust brake in tow/haul mode is pretty good too.



So far (need to knock on wood) I haven't had a single CEL. Only problem I have is that on occasion it seems to pop out of reverse when backing up.

I'm trading off a Ford F550 that has run at 19,500 lbs for the past 450K miles... we use card locks and can track almost all fuel through this truck in the past 8 years... .

We are putting into service a 5500 rated at 19,500 and it now has 9,000 miles and is seeing its next oil change... ... so far we've not seen the change oil light...

Currently with just 9,000 miles were seeing better fuel economy on the 08 than the Ford... using it on the same runs, and hauls by almost 2 1/2 mpg... . as long as it stays better than..... and the repair costs are less than those of the F550 we'll be very happy... ...

We've found that you really can't judge fuel economy over 10 tanks of fuel... . but by looking back 25,000 or 50,000 miles you get a much better overall picture... .

BTW - Ford, just under 10, Dodge just over 11. 5 to date... .

IMO 6. 7 mileage isn't that bad at all. I'm lucky to get 13 on any given day, hand calc. Here are my last few tanks, most of which is freeway miles:

It would have been nice to have the six speed and factory exhaust brake and most likely better fuel economy.



My shop's F450 six-leaker with a 12-foot flatbed gets the same mileage. Boo-hoo. (at least my Dodge won't need a new motor at 88k miles :-laf)

Well when you come from a truck that got 20+ to a truck that gets maybe 15 it is bad. if these people want to be OK with that kind of milage at these prices have at it! Me I think it sucks! and for all those that believe that garbage about the 30-40K "break in" It has never happened to any of mine,they have not changed more than 1 maybe 2 mpg at best. by the way maybe one of them can tell me just what it is that changes to make the magical MPG happen? not flamin just sayin.

When engines are "tight "there is a lot of additional friction. It takes a break in period for things to become "seated" when this break in reaches its max things will perform better. Same thing all the way down the drive line. Will it make a big difference ... heck no... can you keep your fingers crossed... I guess. Bottom line ... . say goodbye to the 5. 9 . I do have hopes for the 6. 7 and I believe it will turn out to be a good motor if you get it straight piped and someone will come out with a programmer that will make it perform. If its loud ,stinks, or smokes I gotta have it.
