I rotated the tires the other day, and checked the tread depth with a depth checker. I was surprised to find that all four rears checked at 9/32 of an inch of tread. The fronts checked at 13/32 of an inch. The bummer part is that there is only 15k on the tires!! Granted I do tow a lot, but the tires are always inflated to manufacture specs, and I am far from my maximum payload. The only thing I'm not sure of is, what the new tire tread depth was. At this rate, the tires are not going to make a year before they need to be replaced. :{

Has anyone else experienced this with the OE tires? I thought that Generals were a better tire than that. :(

So are the 04. 5 comming with General tires on them from the factory or is this just the duallys? If so another cost cutting move. I have never had any General tires myself.

Who cares if its a price cut. They test the tires and they passed whatever test was put on them. If you owned DC you'd do the same

General tires are usually decent. . Ive had a couple sets of AT's on my jeep, back in the day, and Ive got the michelins on my truck now, but if mine had generals on em, I wouldnt have stressed about it. Im not sure why they would be wearing so fast.

Sarge,

Your tires are wearing better than my Generals at the 15,000 mile point. I don't expect to get much past 30,000 -35,000 miles out of them... and winter is upon us.

Quote from Sarge, " but the tires are always inflated to manufacture specs"

What specs? I pull a livestock trailer that routinely weighs in at 25K and I never run mine up to 80psi. I've been keeping them at 70 psi lately... trying to wear out the edges a little. The centers of mine are wearing fast. I'm running about 4/32 down the middle and 6-7/32 on the outer edge. At 80psi the tires are rated at approx 3050lb. You REALLY gotta load it heavy to get that much. It's A-OK to rund them at a lower psi, just don't get carried away.

Oh yeah, I'll turn over 26k miles tomorrow. With any luck I'll make it to 30K. Last set of Generals for me that's for sure. I got 50k on the rear's of my '01 w/ both the factory Goodyear Wrangler AP's and Mastercraft Courser AT's(twice).

As a side note...

I stopped in at the dealer a couple weks after I bought my truck and the salesman came out to look at it. (he wanted to get a closer look at the "RAM 3500" on the hood) He asked me if I put different tires on it. He didn't seem to know that they came with Generals and he was obviously disappointed. Kinda makes ya wonder.

That is kinda curious reaction from a salesman. I run the rears at 40# when empty, and 65# loaded. The fronts are 55# empty, and 65# loaded. If 15/32 are new, then the fronts are wearing ok, being at 13/32. But the 9/32 on all four rears is horrible. That means that in eight months or 14K miles, I will be buying new rubber... ... . :-(
