Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) poor milage.

I have a 2001 Dodge 1 ton 4x4 with 4:10 gears, loaded I get 500 kilometers on 100 liters of fuel, I think this comes out at 12 miles per gallon, ant suggestion on how to improve the milage. Thanks.

First off, Get rid of Kilometers and liters, you are in the good old USA, where Kil. and ltrs don't mean squat, Then someone might give you some tips!!!

As Bob says, depends on the load. I wish I could get 12 mpg. pulling 32' fifth wheel, usually about 9 t0 10. If you are not really loaded up the 4:10 gears may cost you a little mileage? bg

Do you have a fuel pressure gauge? Very important to keep a constant supply of fuel to the vp, prolonged low pressure will wear the pump prematurely. Also need to report any codes you may have, that may or may not lead to any underlying issues.

I have 180000 kilometers on the truck, have done some steering up grades,four inch exhaust, knfilter other than that just normal maintaince.

Is that 12 mpg imp or USmpg? What type of loads are you pulling over what type of terrain. What type of empty driving are you doing. ? Is truck lifted? and what size of tires? Many, Many reasons for low mileage aside from actual engine related problems



Is this winter/sub zero temps or? Where you from Firefighter? We need a lot more info to make any kind of an informed diagnosis.

I live in Victoria BC. a lot of mountain driving when loaded with camper and towing tracker probable about 5500lbs with hitch weight, the truck is at factory height and using bf Goodrich all terrain tires, figured 12 miles to imperial gallon, the mileage does not change from loaded to empty, I mostly travel at 55 miles per hour if I go any faster the fuel mileage will go down.

Used to live in Port Kells a few years ago. Your mileage loaded could be realistic but your empty mileage should be around 16 at least Imp. in the summer.



There is a good diesel shop in Langley, (can't think of the name right now) that should be able to fix you up. Possible inj pump timing not advancing enough.



Has mileage always been like this or changed for some reason? How long have you owned it?



Maybe someone else can chime in on the Dodge guys in Langley?

I'm not sure what you mean,what's not possible, when I drive to Quesnell BC to go moose hunting I spend about 355. 00 for fuel one way, I got a large moose and had to put into butcher in Quesnell due to weather, I had to come home early before the butcher was done, I returned a month later for the meat, it cost me within 30. 00 for fuel going up empty as it did loaded.

If the ejection pump is not advancing would I not get a code in the computer? I checked no codes.

I have heard that when VP44's start to wear that fuel milage begins to fall off.

Are you using the mileage indicated on the electronics, or manually computing? Do you have a boost gauge? I don't see how you can get the same mileage empty and loaded, unless you have a problem with lockup, boost or waste gate. By the way, The K&N filter will allow lots of contaminants into that engine. Get a factory or other pleated/foam type asap.

I see you have a one ton Is it a duelly. If so make sure all your rear wheels are the same size and same wear and inflated the same. Makes a big difference.
