When I go to pass someone in any of the top gears (1800 - 2000 rpm or so) and push the throttle to the floor not much seems to happen. After a second or two of disappointment I usually give up and start letting back on the pedal figuring I should have known better and shifted down a gear first. Then, all of a sudden as I’m easing back on the throttle the engine seems to come to life and start accelerating. I don’t think it has anything to do with waiting long enough for the boost to come up, it doesn’t seem to matter how long I hold the pedal to the floor, not much seems to happen. (wondering why I spent the extra money for a H. O. ) It seems that the beast will only accelerate at it’s maximum rate when the pedal is pushed just a little past the hold steady position. If one continues to add just a little extra pedal as it speeds up it will continue to accelerate. But if one pushes too far down it’s counter productive!

I traded in a ’94 Cummins with 244K miles on it and it drove and responded to the pedal one heck of a lot better than this new one. It’s like driving an old gas vehicle whose accelerator pump wasn’t working properly and it would “lean-out” when floored instead of accelerating.

Am I the only one experiencing this? I can’t believe that this is normal, with out the vast majority of the TDR posters venting their displeasure with this poor response. Does anyone have any experience or input on how to resolve this problem? The diesel service techs at DC kind of smile and say that it’s not unusual. They say I only notice it because I got out of a ’94 and they drove so good. (like that’s supposed to make me feel better)

Will appreciate any and all words of wisdom from the bretheren . . .

Know exactly what you mean. Mine has done this since it was new, have learned to floor it, then let off to get it to act like it should. Will be putting an EZ box on it shortly. Have got over 51,000 miles on it now, so if anything was going to show up as far as engine problems , it should have happened by now. I know several people with the 03's that do the same thing. I got out of a 95 with 419,000 on it with a DTT transmission that would leave this one from 55 to 80. It was enhanced a bit and that made a world of difference so we will see what the EZ will do for the 03.

You'll be very happy with the EZ :D

I just returned home from my first big trip after installing the EZ and pinching off the wategate supply line (temporary, will fix it proper this week).

I towed 3 horses and enough tack for 5, 300# feed, 8 bales of hay, 4 coolers packed with a weeks worth of food and beverages ;) ... ... . basically packed to the gills ... ..... from Southern Ohio to Northern Tennessee. This thing is awesome Oo. .

At one point I was climbing a 5%, 5 mi long incline and chased a Ford EMPTY, lol, I heard (it or him) downshift about 3/4 of the way up and he couldn't leave me at around 80 MPH. Easily hit 40psi and could maintain 1200 or less with throttle control.

I'm very pleased with my little black box:D :D :D :D

Throttle Response

You are not alone,I have the same problem,Only worse after an

unauthorized ref lash by a Dodge dealer,Also the motor takes A

long time to unwind when shifting up to another gear,I think this is Smog B. S. related, I payed for the HO $600. 00 and lost it to

the re flash! GWD:(

Seems to me that you should demand that they re-install the HO programing since you paid for it. If the modified program in the new flash is that bad why are they using it???

I would think the delay is for reduced emissions reasons. It seems to me diesels are dirtiest when spooling up. The older pump and VP trucks, didnt need to be as clean,so they can fuel quicker, this is just my guess.

I'm on the other side

My old truck is a stock '95 5 spd. My new one is a stock HO 6spd. My new one has sooo much more pedal response than my 95. I can't get the grin off my face when I drive this thing. When I punch it, it pushes me back into the seat and just goes, even when I'm already going 60. So maybe not everyone's is slow to respond. I'm passing things I never would have thought of passing in the old truck.

Last week I had the camper on and loaded. It puts me about 12K lbs. I pulled out of a turn-off onto the highway going up hill. There was a pickup coming in the distance. My wife says to me "You wouldn't have pulled out in front of the pickup in the old truck. " Heck no. But that truck didn't have to slow down. In fact, I was doing 80 at the top of the hill and he was a little bitty dot in my mirrors. Oo.

I was in souther Cal. a while back cruising with traffic in the fast lane. We were all doing about 80 and even at that speed this thing will ACCELERATE hard all the way to 100. I was amazed at the way this thing goes!

I have to say I haven't had this problem  I have noticed that when I let off after full throttle at highway speeds it seems to get faster for a second though. All I know is when I floor it at 80, 100mph comes in about 4 seconds :D My only problem is it won't go much over 100mph :(

This is a known hickup...

for 2 gen 24 valve trucks. It may have carried over to the 3rd gen truck electronics. The deal in the second gen trucks is the ECM is programed to make sure the engine does not exceed certain parameters. When you apply the pedal to the floor, you have told the systems to open everything up full tilt. The ECM sees this and says to all of the other systems, "let's be a little cautious about this. "

This is why when you back off the pedal a little bit, your rate acceleration improves; put it back on the floor and it decreases the rate of acceleration a little.

This is still noticable on my '99 with the EZ installed.

My '92 is old enough that it does not have much electronic stuff on the engine... it does not have this issue. :D
