Hey Guys, I have a question for you all. The other day my truck started making a poping sound when I was going slow and would turn the stearing wheel. I thouhgt it was low on power stearing fuild, but it was not. The sound is only heard inside the cab. The only other thing that I think it could be is the small U joints that are on the stearing column. Has anyone ever replaced them and how hard is it to do. I appreciate all of your help.

Caleb,
If your truck is 4 wheel drive, check the u-joints on the front axle shafts. These will start making noise when they wear out especially when turning corners.

"Poping" noise usually means that the St. Christopher figurine on your dashboard is wearing out. You need to listen very carefully, however, to distinguish these sounds from other problems. The "poping" will be in Latin. Hope (and pray) that this helps!

Caleb-
I had a similar problem that drove me crazy. It wouldn't do it all the time, just here and there. It usually made the noise when I was turning and compressing the shocks. I hunted everywhere for the d**n problem. Turns out that ocassionally when the shock absorber was compressed, the dust cover would get in a bind and pop. Don't know if this will help any, but take a look at your shocks and see if this could be the case. I'm sure that if my shocks had a flexible dust cover, this wouldn't happen.

I had 4 Rams in the shop this week for brake work and 3 of them had bad front u-joints [right side worse than the left] One only had 51000 miles on it.

I Don't know whst yr your Ram is but my 97 had the steering columb changed twice under warranty. The columb is a one piece unit that is not repairable. Mine was making noises turning the wheel and you could push the shift right into reverse with out pulling back on the handle. Very bad if your parked and running in neutral. The dealer replaced it at 30,000. Then again at 38,000.
Its making noise again at 60,000 and my warrenty runs out at 75,000. Hope this is the last time.
