I develeped a major oil leak. It is the bottom of the tappet cover gasket. I was able to push it back in. What can I do to make it a better fix? :{

I have done this twice. I put permatex between the gasket and the plate. Not between the gasket and the engine, although I am not saying that is not good too. I just did not do it. So far so good.

If it is on a higher mileage truck, just pull it and replace it, it has probably hardened up enough that it won't seal anymore. Believe me, I found this out the hard way. If you are careful, and part contortionist, you can remove the bolts from the cover and install a new gasket without removing the pump. -Nicholas

mines leaking like a bi... . ya know!!! im hoping to replace mine with the pump on but we will see!!! its gonna be tough but i have the set of gaskets from O'Riellys... i can get the part number when i get home from wyoming tuesday... . it was CHEAP TOO!!

Add another crankcase vent to help relieve the pressure that is pushing out the gasket. If you don't and you do get the tappet cover sealed and tight,the next one will be the oil pan gasket and thats a real PIA to change... ... . Andy

I just did one on a truck and say good luck doing it with the pump in place especially with the pump support bracket being so close. for the 45 min it takes me to yank the pump its just easier then fiddling around busting up my knuckles working hunched over in a confined space I guess.

one tip is make sure you face the gasket out the right way or it will leak, hence why I was fixing a shops screw up to begin with. when you put it on the cover make sure the thicker part of the gasket is facing in.
