well guys, I did it... I actually tweaked my pump... I can't BELIEVE I waited almost 9 MONTHS! LOL! but this is my first Cummins and I spent real money on it, and I guess I was just operating under the "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" mindset...

I turned the full power screw up ~1. 5-1. 75 turns (not sure as I removed the entire thing to get the collar off... I marked everything as best I could... it might actually only be turned up 1. 25-1. 5 turns, but I'm not gonna push it till I get an EGT on it... I figure I should be safe at this level... no heavy loads or anything (certainly not till I get an EGT on it!)

I also just HAD to turn the smoke screw up a little!! :D

I actually turned it up 2 turns before I touched the power screw... I turned it back down half a turn after I turned the power up... w/ the 21cm housing, it'll belch a NICE cloud when you romp on it (hey, just doing my part to curb the west-nile virus problem! ;) )

funny thing, when I turned the power up, I kinda freaked out when some fuel trickled out when I removed the thing... I got it back together and the truck wouldn't start!! :--)

I seriously almost **** a brick... I was like "you DUMBASS... you're leaving for Colorado in 4 days and you just BROKE your truck which you have essentially NO experience with!" popped the hood and noticed that one of the plugs had come off the shutoff solenoid! LOL! WHEW!!!

what can I say? I LOVE It... the truck is much more responsive, and I can drive it with barely a trace of smoke, but a nice cloud is just a romp on the pedal away...

it's dark out, but I'm not seeing anything under full power... I'm scared about EGT's w/ no gauges, but like I said, it's probably only 1. 5 turns up and I've got a straight mandrel bend 3" system from turbo to tip (actually got a 4" tip, but... )

when I get back from Colorado next month, I'm gonna pony up for an EGT (I need one for my hot-rod too, so I'll just get one box and two probes) and finally install this 12cm turbine housing I've got and probably go ahead and put a full 4" exhaust on the truck...

I can't really run the truck hard down low as my transmission is crippled (holds gears too long... but I've been babying it for ohhhh about 25k and it's still going) but it's great on the highway and certainly more responsive around town!

does anyone see any problems w/ all this? I realize the 21cm housing is limiting how much fuel I can give it, but I'm under the impression that 1-2 turns is safe w/ my exhaust... I also realize the 12cm housing will probably hurt me a little on the big end, but it'll be more responsive around town and should blow a little more boost in there allowing me to crank the fuel a little more!

my H1C is still in GREAT shape... I inspected it earlier and the shaft spins like it's got a ball bearing center and has VERY little play! but... I have been thinking about an HX35 if I can score one cheap...

ok, I'm rambling now... time for bed... I'm just excited that I finally took the plunge!

Good for you :D :D Just don't keep it pinned for longer than 30 seconds on your trip and you will be ok until you get your egt gauge and find out were you are.

Bomb on:)

Ok mark, I'm in for the race. Since you challenged ME I get to pick which direction I want to face... so... .

I face East and you face West... . :p :p

I bet you're itching to have that thing in. I hear your going away near the end of the month, was it the NWT, or what?? Hunting???? If so, you better make sure I'm not 'hitched' to your tailgate with rifle in hand... ;) ;)

BTW, are you able to post some of your "current setup" numbers?

I was wondering what your mileage eg: aver/max was, as well as EGT's before the change over.

Regards, Bob.

Bob, I'm heading on the 14th for our anual moose hunting trip up the alaska hwy. :D :D 7 Bulls in the last 5 years so i can't complain.

I've detuned my truck as far as i can go for everyday use as i can't use the power with the high egt's am getting. I still have way more fuel then what i can use until the cam install.

Even with the setting detuned as far as i can go i still peg the egt gauge= 1500+

DETUNED AVERAGE NUMBERS.

Mileage average... city 18. 9mpg... hwy 20. 6mpg

60mph= 4. 5psi/ egt's=575 deg... . at 100mph 24psi/egt's=1075deg

Boost max=32psi

Egt's... . idle in park=225... . in drive=350... . max=1500+as gauge only goes to 1500.

Forrest, sure makes a nice difference, doesn't it? Best part is that this is one case where the power upgrade is free. :D Going from the 21cm to the 12cm will really wake it up more too. I'm sure different trucks vary, but I have my power screw up 2 turns and EGT's don't go past ~1200 at WOT 5th gear, without a trailer behind me. All I'm saying is you should be safe as long as you don't tow until you get your gauges. With trailer and hills, the EGT's will definitely get hot quick. :--)

Mark & Bob, I envy you guys for being close to PDR. Probably just as well, I'd just be drooling on Piers' counter. ;) Oh well, at least I'm close to Muncie and Terre Haute...

Mark,

Good lord man, your running 1500*F detuned :--) :--) :--)

Holy crap !!!!!!!! I'm nervous running 1200*F max.

I sure do wish I was going with ya up north. My brother and I have been on the trail of Elk for the last few years but a: we never get a 'draw', and b: they few 6 pointers seem to outwit us, or come/go before I can get away.

How long you gone for??

I look forward to seeing your numbers when you get back.

Actually mine are fairly close to yours, though the EGT's aren't as high of course.

In your case, did you find you had better response by using the starwheel heavy and the full fuel light, or the other way round??

Just a thought, but have you done any "work" to the 'pin' under the diaphram? ;)

I'm asking about the starwheel etc since I think I may try backing the full fuel screw out a turn or so and leaning on the starwheel more to see how that changes things.

Anyway, have a safe trip and look forward to chatting on your return.

I know what you mean about living close to PDR/DTT it can get expensive. I do like one thing though.

Both those places will talk you through anything if you need help.

Rarely have I ever had a question 'fudged on' so to speak, and in those rare cases (1 or 2) it was because the question was something that was a 'trick of the trade' so to speak. You can't give it all away, which is fair.

Piers and Al are great guys. They've both talked me out of things I really didn't need, or wasn't worth the $$. That's one reason why I never really question their advice.

If you have anything you need help with, just ask, it's how I learned along with most others here.

Good luck.

Bob

Bob, :D :p Gone til we bag Bullwinkle, ;) then load my boat for a week halibut & salmon fishing 26 miles off shore of the west coast of Vancouver island. :D :D Piers is going 1 week after i go.

Got to load that freezer for a year.

I wasn't kidding when i said detuned all the way. Everything turned out! Power screw too. Diaphragm at stock, starwheel turned counter clockwise (out) all the way, i'm surprised it hasn't fell off the threads. Smoke screw too. Right to the top.

I've told you some.

Can't give away all my secrets. ;)

Bob,

I met and talked with Piers at Muncie this year and I got the same thing - straight answers on what to spend money on and what not to. Got my 16cm housing from him while there. He is very knowledgeable and helpful, a real A1 guy. He showed me more simple tweaks for my pump too. Since I don't have an auto trans, I haven't dealt with DTT. I personally prefer a manual trans in just about any case.

The truck will be put on the dyno for the first time at Scheid's event coming up. I want to see what the numbers are with the fiddling I've done up to this point. The main thing I'm after is towing power to be able to smoke my buddie's rigs when we go on Jeep'n trips. :D Getting there is half the fun!

I'll take you up on your offer for help. What would you recommend I do to get the best numbers I can on the dyno? I can dig up the sheet where I have written down the adjustments made to the pump. Thanks!

Mark,

Good luck with that moose. My grandfather used to go up to Canada for the same thing. Was good eating. ;)
