I have a popping noise that comes from the steering colum on a fairly regular basis. It feels like something is binding then releasing with a distinctive "pop". I cannot duplicate the noise on command but it happens every time I drive the truck. Also, I don't always have turn the wheel to get this noise. Sometimes, if I readjust in my seat and use the wheel for a little leverage I will get the pop. I'm 99% sure it's in the colum and not the sterring box or other associated componets.

I'm tempted to bring the truck in for service but I know I will get the same old " Mr. Rosco, we cannot duplicate the noise in your truck so we would like our service manager to drive it a couple of days to document the noise". I for one don't let my wife drive my truck let alone some dealer employee so I was hoping someone has been down this road and knows what the problem is.

If you are saying that you cannot feel anything binding while turning the wheel, then I would check the mounting bracket(s) on the column itself. Could be a loose bolt allowing just enough play to let the bracket "pop".

I would also recommend removing the plastic housing around the column and seeing if that fixes the sound. If it doesn't it might make it a little easier to hear (or see) what's going on under there.

The intermediate steering shaft can sometimes make a popping/snapping noise. They can be lubed and will quiet down. It is located between the gear and the column.

As for not wanting anyone drive your truck, I can see not sharing the wife, but the truck is just a bunch of parts. If they break that easy, no one would have a running truck. Mine gets loaned out all the time.
