Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Pops out exhaust with no load?

My buddy has a 95 that pops when in netural, major pops, out the exhaust with white smoke mixed into the black. Won't rev past 2,000, But in gear under a load in revs out to 3000 easily and smoothly. Put a new overflow valve in, new filter, #4 TST plate, all no change.

Sounds like the timing may have slipped.

That'd be my guess. I need to adavance mine, too. It only does the popping when cold, and hasn't been warmed up enough.

Is there a good starting point to set the timing to? Any ideas for the mods I described?

I know nothing about timing but my baby pops and gurgles like that when cold too what CAN I DO? White smoke to but only when cold can any diesel mechanic do the timing if they got a good rep or only the skilled mofugers :-laf

Has your buddy replaced the rubber fuel lines up by the fuel filter?

Air infiltration will cause similar popping/low power/white smoke issues.

You can start with the air filter.

Then go to the fuel filter.

Then check fuel pressure or look at the rubber fuel lines.

After that go to the timing.

Any mechanic with the tools can do the job. Even you, after some observing it a time or two. The secret is the tools.
