anyone know why my truck would pop out of gear going down hills with my Jacob's brake on? It doesn't do it every time but has done it on a few occasions. Should I be worried and trade it off ASAP or is it a minor fix? TIA, Chris

Usually popping out of gear when decelerating is because of worn synchro rings. The jake puts more decel force, causes it to pop, so you attribute it to the jake.

Keep your hand on the shifter with the brake on and keep driving it for another 150K.

NPS... thanks for the quick reply. I've been looking for a truck to trade for since I posted and haven't seen anything I like yet. Thanks again, Chris

Chris, what gear is jumping out? Is it just 5th or all of them. When they jump out of gear on deceleration you have problems in there. It can be loose bearings, the sliding clutch gear, the gear it meshes with or both. Holding it in gear with the stick is a short term fix, hard on the forks and it will only get worse.

It only happens in 5th gear and only occasionally and while towing my gooseneck trailer... has happened maybe 5 or 6 times in the last 5000 miles.

Sounds like fifth gear might be starting to wobble. If you haven't done the mainshaft replacement, you might start thinking about Blumenthal or Standard Transmission. It's always something...

Don't know if the Dodge manual is like the Ford ZF, my ZF started popping out of 5th or even 4th using the exhaust brake going downhill. That was 50 or 60k ago, then I went to Anchorage with a 3 axle 5er. DOC said he knows the ZF and said it would hold together. Got worse and worse, now pops out of most all gears accelerating or decelerating. Got to feeling the shafts moving around. Finally decided to ground myself where I wanted to rather than on the road. Left her sitting on the street in front of my residence for bout 6 mos. Plates ran out, wifey. . . God Bless Her, got an extra May month sticker and pasted it on over the 04 year sticker quite awhile back. Well, one of my "good neighbors" couldn't stand it anymore and called the cops. They chalked the tires and crayoned the windshield and gave us till noon yesterday to move it. No ticket, the cop must not have noticed wifey's creative year sticker, just a 5 not an 05. Good enough. . . she had the tow insurance flat tow it to her dad's driveway. I put that girl through college, looks like it paid off. Cept now I need a trailer or dolly that I can tow 7,200 lb CC dually LB back to Angola, IN to DOC's place. I'm leaving Lakewood, CO soon's I get the Ram patched up. Anybody got anything I can use to haul my junk to Indiana on? I promise to bring it back in same shape as I get it, will leave my pontoon boat for collateral.

Cheers,

Steve J
