Discovery Channel; 100 years of Titanic

The narrator Bill Paxton mentioned **several times** that Port side is Right side and Starbord is left... ... .

Isn't that backwards??????

If so, wouldn't it be proper to get the facts correct if your producing a... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... ... . documentary?

Yep, you're correct.

The narrator's ignorance is typical of the propandandist profession. Knowledge and understanding are not requirements to become a television journalist. Perhaps they are even discouraged because knowledge and understanding would make a prospect unsuitable for spreading their lies.

THe documentary channel is mostly factless.
It is a tool for the propaganda machine.
Port is the left side.

In the "old" Navy it was larboard but yes, we just LEFT port worked for me. Discovery channel can be very annoying.

Port = Left. Starboard = Right.

My 10 year old grand daughter even knows that, I made her memorize that before I let her steer the boat.

Hang the ker from the yardarm... arghhhh

Compared to what I just heard on FOX NEWS that's nothing. The news anchor( whose name I don't know) was speaking about the Ca. manhunt. The police think they have the guy 1cornered. The news anchor said time and daylight were on their side because sunset wasn't until after 5pm and "In Ca the sun sets in the west". Another candidate for the mensa club.

I would say that is accurate!! But, I am curious if the anchor thinks it sets somewhere else in other states or countries?

Big, way back when ships were young (lol) the steering "board" went over the right side of the ship, so the right was "steerboard", which evolved into starboard. When the ship docked they didn't want to crush the steering arm, so they docked on the left side, or "port". How's that for history?

Still like the right/left idea seems simple to me. :D But thanks for the History lesson

Next time I plow with the mules and use commands like

Jacob/Earl Step UP!!! Get ready for another command

Kissing sound: Speed up, faster.

Gee!: Turn to the right.

Haw!: Turn to the left.

Easy!: Slow down.

Whoa: Stop.

On By!: Pass another team or other distraction.

I will try port side and starboard side and see how far that get's me :-laf

Besides you could not have a POSH cabin (Port Outbound- Starboard Home) with right and left :-laf

I always use the saying "Red Right Returning". I also "cheat" in that I have a red and a green plastic bottle cap I keep at the helm on my instrument panel. Depending on which way I'm going I move the bottle caps appropriately so I (or whomever takes the helm) don't have to think about which side to put the channel markers.
