Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) poss valve noise???

Question my 02 ctd has 80000 on it. Last week i noticed a noise. only can here it in cab open the hood can not here it. Sounds like a valve noise does not do it under a load only at idle or when you are off the gas pedal. never have remebered this noise before. do my valves need adjusted. You could also think that it is a rattle back of engine near fire wall. power seems ok. thanks for any help. andy

Nows as good a time to check valve adjust simple to do. or any shop should do for about an 1 to 1 1/2 hour labor. never hurts to check when in doubt.

Did you ever find any resolution? I have a knock very similar to what you are describing and I'm looking for what to do about it. My noise is all the time, but possibly normal engine noise is overcoming your noise when above idle (or mine is possibly just louder)? If you get a chance, I have a sound recording under my post on this matter. Please if you can, compare your noise to my recording... do they sound the same? Did you find what was causing yours? Any help is greatly appreciated.
