Dyno in K.C.

RMTDR & Truckfest info and CMP invite

Well we found a dyno in Cheyenne and are trying to get a head count to see if it's even do-able. This is at a big rig shop and they have evidentally done pickups before. Obviously they are setup for diesels.

Post here if you are interested, I'll go down early next week to see about getting set price per truck rather than their usual hourly rate. I will also check out their setup to see if it'll work for us. I'm not a dyno head, so any recommendations as to what to ask/look for would be helpful. I may dyno my truck as well while I'm there just to make sure, plus I've got bombs on the way and it'd be good to have a base point.

There will also be a get together / BBQ / BS session / campout that weekend at my place. If your coming let us know in the "Attention Wyoming Members" thread if you haven't already.

I'm in

Tim, I will dyno too, I talked to Rob at Wyoming Machinery and this dyno is setup for semi trucks, its a hydrostatic dyno that will measure up to 3000 lbs,ft. of torque:eek: so we need to see if someone can peg it out :D It will handle the duelly trucks no problem with the training wheels and all. Rob said the thing reads out the torque on the display but he needs a pickup point for RPM so it will read the HP, I dont know how ya do that but someone will chime in , how to on 12v and 24 v... ... ... ... ... anyone?

Cheers, Kevin

Looks like I signed up just in time!!! My truck is stock expect for gauges (02 Quadcab 4x4, HO 6sp) and some dyno numbers would be great for a base line. Count me in boys!! MAC :) :) :)

DYNO, DYNO!!!!!!

Add me to the list for the DYNOOo. And also 1 more from here possibly, don't know for sure yet if they will be able to make.

Hi guys! I'd consider going but I'll be choking on Nitro-Methane fumes at Bandimere that weekend :D

The DynoJet dyno uses an optical pick-up and a small piece of reflective tape that is attached to the harmonic balancer for a tach signal.

I don't know what Wyo Machinery uses. They may use a device that senses the the pressure spike (can be ultrasonic or piezo electric type device) in the #1 injection line as the tach trigger? I'm sure they have something that will work.

The hydrostatic type dyno has problems with tire slippage on high HP pickups due to the lack of weight compared to a big-rig. This characteristic tends to produce results that are not very reproducible and can very quite a bit. The dyno operator has a lot to do with the quality of the results. They typically run the engine up to redline in direct drive (1:1) and then drag the engine down till you think something is going to break  or the tires start slipping on the rollers.

Also, rumor has it that the Cheyenne Wyo Machinery store will soon be turned into a Cat rental yard. They will be doing away with the truck and heavy equipment service and repair. Cat parts will still be available but they will not be stocking a large inventory meaning that most parts will have to be ordered.

The others that should be coming with me i would guess wont be dynoing, since they are stock, but i'll ask.

We dont have a firm price yet, we are looking for a number of trucks willing to dyno so we can approach them and get our quote, If you commit to doing the dyno and the price doesnot work out then nobody will be stuck because we have not made the commitment to Cat yet.

Sign up for the dyno so we can get a strong number, 12 to 20 trucks would be great.

Cheers, Kevin

Well, we might be screwed

I stopped by Wyo Machinery today and talked to Rob. He showed me the dyno, it is setup for big rigs, tandems, duallys whatever you can throw at it. Anyway, he told me he needed to talk to the boss yet, but he didn't think they'd be able to do trucks for under $70 a piece. Their normal rate is $140 per hour and most big trucks take about an hour. He thought they could do 2 an hour. He also said if a normal paying customer shows up and needs to get on we would be out. He said sometimes they spend up to 6 hours dynoing a truck.

He told me the dyno calculates torque and uncorrected horse power as they dont have anything to calculate rpm and don't want to have different setups for different trucks. He said it doesn't calculate for wheel slippage either. (Maybe this is a normal thing, I don't know) The dyno drums were huge from what I've seen before and he said it takes a lot to get them going. I told him most of these rigs wouldn't have problems getting some drums to turn:D

Anyway, he said he'd talk to the boss and try to get us the best deal. I should hear back from him in the next two days or I'll bug him again. We may have to just spend more time drinking beer and kicking tires. :( Party on.

Tim, You said 70 per truck or did you mean 70 per hour? If 70 per hour that would be about 35 per truck... ... ... ... ... ... ... Am I just hopeing here? :confused: Or are we gonna be :{

How far to Ft. Collins ?

Cheers, Kevin

well, a buddy who's coming down with me with a stock 6 speed will dyno if that happens (Iron Horse from the DTR). i also may have a chevy 6. 5 coming down too.

Rob said he didn't think the boss would budge on $140 per hour. Two trucks per hour that's $70 per truck. I don't need to dyno that bad. My wife is taking the truck to Montana on the 12th, so the next best thing would be to dyno the ninja. :D If PFI is doing this on the 12th, I doubt they'd wanna go again the following weekend. I'm sure the Cheyenne/Laramie guys wouldn't mind going on the 12th, but I doubt those traveling further would want to come 2 weekends in a row. I'm not sure where to take this, but I'll wait till I hear the final word from Rob. I'll keep ya posted.

DYNO DAY IN CHEYENNE IS A BUST!!

I just got off the phone with Rob. I told him to bag the whole thing. They want 140 per hour plus overtime since they are normally closed on Saturdays. That's over $70 per truck. I'm not THAT interested in dynoing. He said the new manager is a bean counter and won't budge at all on the price. Anyway, we'll have a bombing session and drink more beer before we go to CFD. For those not going to CFD, my folks are going to hang out at the house so you can too. If anybody is interested that bad to do it, PM me and I'll send you their phone number and you can arrange it yourself. Later, Tim
