How did we increase the power for the Cummins 600?

Enhanced fuel system including larger multiple injections. .

Exhaust system increased to four inch diameter from turbo to tailpipe to reduce backpressure

Larger turbocharger compressor wheel and housing for increased air flow.

Higher flow design intercooler and engine-mounted shroud for improved forced air flow and cooling.

This was taken off of Cummins web site. Now if they did ENHANCE the injection and have a post injection cycle wouldn't that be wasting fuel? I can't tell that big a difference to justify the post injection for a quieter truck. Just something for thought.

i admit i am glad i got my 04. 0 since reading about the 04. 5's having reduced MPG.

my last tank was at 18. 9 calculated. overhead says 20. 5.

over all since new is 17. 85

mixed driving, mostly city, no towing or hauling heavy loads.

i was originally concerned that i might have "missed out" on the new version. not any more!!!!

Same old tune, just a different truck

I have read several threads about 600 mileage and overall it doesn't seem any worse than the rest of the 3rd Gen trucks. Or the 2nd Gen trucks. This is very typical. . . when trucks are brand new mileage isn't going to be stellar, and there's always a lot of complaining. And there are always those 10-15% of the guys who get lousy mileage no matter what, whether or not the truck is really at fault. I believe there are always a few trucks that are duds but not that many IMO.

When i picked up my 01 H. O. it had 2 miles on it before my test drive and 7 when i left the dealer my first tank was 17. Now to get 13-14 I don't think so. I got the reflash but haven't drove the truck but 15 miles so i can't tell if it did any good yet or not. I will not keep the truck if it doesn't get better than it is now and i'm not waiting to see since i didn't have to on my other one.

Vaughn,

I agree with you. Being that it usually takes at least 15K to break these engine in, I think the new owners need to be patient. The mileage will continue to rise, and after 15K you should get the reasonable mileage you expect.

FWIW, I got 17. 5 driving local empty on my last tank of fuel. It was only about 250 miles because I needed to refuel for a trip. With my 01. 5, I was getting about 18. 5 doing the same driving after 35,000 miles and Amsoil'd. I think my 04. 5 will turn out to be just as good.

I do hope so but first impressions are important and since having a cummins before i can't see why the two would be so drastic in mpg.

A friend of mine and I bought our 2001. 5's a couple of months apart, the only difference in the trucks, his had the 4. 10 and mine 3. 54. He was getting 20 mpg w/in a month, mine 15-17mpg. Again the only difference was he hooked up his 10k 5th wheel and drove it hard for a week or so. Mine didn't improve till I had almost 10k on it and was able to tow. Cummins claims if you don't work them it can take almost 20k miles to break them in.

Patience grasshopper.
