2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission Possible Purchase, Few Questions

I found an 01 3500 QC 4x4 HO 6spd power everything w/ 192,000 miles. Very clean truck, at least according to the pictures and the owner. He's asking $15,500 and says the truck is "very tight. "



What should I be looking for w/ this kind of mileage? I don't know the maintenance history, but I'd like to be able to get another 50-100k miles troublefree.



I'll be flying about 1500 miles to pick it up and the owner says all it needs is diesel fuel to get me home. Clutch, brakes, steering (no pulls in either direction he says) and suspension are all good. He says it looks and drives more like a truck with 80k than 192k.



Any advice is appreciated! Thanks for reading.

Id be looking for the #52? block, the one that cracks... .

Id also have the injection pump checked to make sure its working good.

Check maintainance records

check body for prior accidents

check under doors and tailgate for rust

do a carfax. Other than that, im sure the truck is fine!

good lookin' rig!!! they're million mile trucks... only problem is the fuel system... supplement the stock lift pump with an aftermarket electric pump to feed it, and you should be good to go assuming no damage has been done already.



make sure it doesn't have a #53 block, although at 192k miles, I would say if a 53 was going to crack, it would have done it by now.

Geez, that black truck is one nice looking rig!!! Tell us more about it, how much is the guy asking.



300k is not uncommon, many owners around here have over 300k. The cummins 24v as long as it is not starved for oil- should last at least 500k. A diesel engine can really go forever million miles or more, just as long as it is taken care of. If the truck is an AUTO make sure it has been rebuilt before and if it was taken care of. The bosch electronic injection pump is the main problem, add a fass fuel system and your good to go.



This will give you a base on it- I bought my 96 2500 5spd 12v extended cab 4x4 in good condition with 160k miles on it about 4 months ago on ebay. It was bone stock 2nd owner truck. I got it for 9,000 cash from oregon, federal emissions- so no EGR! Oo. :-laf Now- a truck with 300k 24v 2wd 3500 in good shape should be no more than 10k since it is newer than my 96...

Hate to be the negative one of the bunch, but better make sure that's a round-trip ticket in case the seller hasn't been completely honest with you.

I sold a my 98. 5 3500 4x4 dually for 17500. 00. It had 114000 on the clock. I had done some mods to it, and thought the price was fair. Since your asking, I think you could find a better deal. You wouldd probably know better, as you have been looking for the truck. With that mileage, and without believable written documentation, I would have concerns about the injection pump, and a large portion of the front suspension needing work. I would have no problem buying a truck like this from someone I know, and whose maintenance practices I have seen. I do know that these trucks are a little hard to find used in Cali... . Ryan

Well the search continues as I have given up on this one. I don't enjoy being lied to.



I asked the seller if there were any scratches and he said the passenger rear fender had a couple "minor" ones. I asked for a close-up picture and this is what I got: not only are there scratches, there is also a crack ...

In the used car market, 9 out of 10 times the seller will lie and not disclose many things- Thus, problem with buying on ebay. I got lucky, my truck only had 2 small dings that he didnt tell me about but i expected that and that is why the buy it now price was 9500 and i told him I was only giving him 9000. he accepted so that gave me an oppurtunity to fix any extra problems. If I was you, go on ebay and look in oregon and nevada for a truck. California trucks are far and few and you will pay a good 10-20 percent more.

Try Craigslist. There are quite a few ctd's in there. Just bought the wife a used car from a seller on craigslist and it was an excelent deal. Californians use Craigslist more than the want ads now

I went through that recently. I found a "nice" one I thought I'd buy from a Dodge dealer. I asked for more, detailed and close-up pics. It didn't look so good in those - torn seat, dents, mis-matched tires, etc. Saved me a trip to OH.
