Hi my name is Don from da Big Island of Hawaii. I think I have been on this forum when I lived in Alaska but I think my old membership lapsed. Back then, I had my own diesel holy grail- a 98 12v quad cab dually. That truck was perfect for what I was doing in Alaska at the time.
I live in Hawaii now, and have built and flipped a couple Jeeps and kept my favorite three for myself.
Recently, I picked up a storage-lot sale 4bt. It was brought here to do a swap in a TJ and owner moved off island and disappeared as far as the storage people are concerned.
I have a fairly hard to find and somewhat rare 93 SE ZJ Gran Cherokee. It is the ideal big island vehicle if it were bio-diesel 4bt for my needs- EVER. First off- it has no power windows or locks and that means they don't go away like all other electronics do on this island. I don't want a motor with a computer, as much as possible, and if I do, it has to be cheap and easy to replace. This vehicle is not only hard to find here, I got it cheap and have put 30k miles on it + and it has 218k now. Body is better than anything usually over 5 years old here. Something gets parked and sits here, it goes away, permanently, in about 2-4 years. I mean, can't recognize the vehicle easy. So-
I have this 4bt I got for cheap in storage until I gather all the parts I want for this vehicle. I was saving for a new vehicle, and have a nice monthly budget and plan to do it right. I will be in parts collection phase for the next year. I will keep driving the vehicle until I have all the big parts I need, and all the small ones I can anticipate.
That is what this thread is about- I only see one ZJ online ever with a 4bt- and that is back in 2007. I have heard it is a common swap- but I am having a hard time finding out all I would like to know about them.
I do understand that the A518 Dodge truck with 231 transcase works perfect, and I believe a bolt up item.
I plan on getting a set of Dana 60s-44s on this ZJ- in fact, the first "big ticket" item I am buying. Next is 7inch long arm lift, and accompanying tires and rims I plan to use.
Some questions I have- is there any information online about how this was wired up? What kind of electronics do I need to make the 4bt run? I am trying to recall how my old dodge ram 3500 had it- but it actually had a computer. But no EFI.
Any online posts anyone can find that can answer some questions would be great.
P.S.- welding and fab part is the easy part for me of this build. Its the parts-mating I am have to pay for and get ready a bit more of a challenge!
