I recently installed BDTD with outlook on my 06 3500DRW 6sp. I mounted the pyro post turbo. What are safe temps with a post turbo pyro?
 
Depends on which 3rd gen you have, 900 degrees is a pretty safe number to stay under. You can call Cummins and ask them, that is what I did, they reconmend post turbo for the probe, for my '03 they said 900 degrees.
 
Thanks for the info. I set the truck to stock and ran it hard and got up to 1220 on the post pyro. The truck runs 650-750 @ 55mph unloaded. I have heard 900 from other people too but it just seems really low condsidering I can run 1220 in stock.
 
That seems a bit hot. I'm running close to those temps at 75 mph pre turbo. I would not run it up to 1220* any more. You may have a problem with your pyro or the tune of your motor. You want to check it out before you do some damage.
 
My motor is stock and I plan to keep it that way. I have my probe post turbo, mainly to monitor cooldown. Towing up a long grade in hot weather it will get up to 1200. Since it's stock and under warranty, I don't worry about it. Normally it runs 450-600 unloaded in warmer weather. I have never seen it over 800 empty, I have to be towing uphill to get higher than that.



Depending on the year of your truck it will vary. 2003 and 2004 will run cooler, 2004. 5 and beyond have the third injection event. This heats the exhaust hotter and helps the cat converter work to meet emissions.
 
I just recently moved my probe from post to pre turbo. Post turbo stock I would see over 1000 empty pulling hills in 6th gear. At 21K lbs gross up the same hills but in 5th gear at around 55mph I would only be running 850-900. All this is with the truck stock.



Now with the Smarty running on level 5 I have not towed. On a uphill acceleration on my way to work I would see 1100 post turbo before 80mph.



Now that my probe is in the manifold I see 1500 on the same hill same driving style. My gauge stops at 1500 so it could of gone more.



I would say though that 1220 post turbo is way to hot for a sustained amount of time. I believe from what I have seen cummins says 960 sustained post turbo.
 
Thanks guys, I guess I will be mounting a pre-turbo pyro also so I can get more accurate numbers since my figures seem to be a lot higher than everyone elses. I don't understand it, I can pass 1000 with the programmer in tow mode without even pushing it hard. Bad pyro? False readings? Does this happen often or are they always pretty accurate?

I can send mine to 1500* quicker than a Stroker guy can wish upon a star for a real engine:D Dont hold it there long though or Ill be picking up dropped valve seats or something awful like that. Its huffer time for me, just need to save back a little more money.

I don't know how often it happens but my pyro just went bad. I have the replacement sitting in the garage now.
