What else for preventive maintaince?

I am thinking about ordering one of the BD 3 piece exhaust manifolds. Before installing it on the engine I was going to get it powdercoated red. Would the powdercoat hold up to the extreme temps of the exhaust manifold, or would it burn or chip away and be a waste of investment.

Powder coat will smoke pretty fast. If I remember correctly, it starts to melt at 350 degrees. What about some of the HPC coatings like Jet-hot or Nitro-plate ? I know they have several colors available also.

I have had really good luck on gas motors with Plastikote Hot Paint. I've had good luck with it holding up on old rusty manifolds if properly degreased and coated. Several have lasted for 5yrs or more without degradation. It's rated for like 1200*. That being said I don't know how well it would hold up on a turbo diesel that could see exhaust temps that high or higher if not monitored pretty closely.

Agreed. I've used it on my gassers, but I definitely wouldn't use it on a Cummins... . I hit 1350* with my '05 going up Wolf Creek Pass, towing our Airstream.

JetHot is good stuff, but I've never heard of Nitro Plate, so I can't comment on it.

While the EGT's may get above 1200* the iron will take much longer to get that hot. 1200* iron is blood red in color. The air temp inside the manifold would have to be much hotter, and be sustained for a long period of time before the metal got that hot. I used 1400* woodstove paint on mine, and it looks great. Proper surface prep is the key. Clean, clean, clean.

The powder coater I use here in AK also does Jet Hot and some other coatings that will hold up to 2000 deg. Just call around.

I have the ATS Manifold and I had it ceramic coated by Classic Coatings in Wisconsin. they have coated a number of items on my truck at great prices. They have a web site

I had the outside and the inside done for smooth flow. I see no problems with EGT being to high. And manifold always looks good instead of rusty!

The ceramic coating will hold more heat in than paint. Coating the manifold and turbine housing might even help the turbo spool better. It would keep under hood temps down, as well.
