If the Smarty ODD numbered programs are for use WITHOUT add-on power boxes like my Comp, does that mean that if I want to use Smarty program #1, the economy setting, I must turn the Comp off?

yes. Smarty on #1 has pretty aggresive timing. if you mixed that with the added timing of your comp, you might have problems.

I'll second post #2. If you're going for economy, why would want the Comp on? If your answer is - because mpg is better with Comp (at least on low settings) than without. Then I would say that is because of the timing that the Comp adds. The Smarty on #1 uses, what I would call, the maximum allowable timing advance. Please note the instructions where it says - not recommended for towing! Bottom line is, if Smarty #1 is max timing, then you certainly don't want to add any more from the Comp. Excessive cylinder pressure is the risk, head gaskets are usually the first to go, but it could be worse.
