I recently noticed that the rpm of my engine had to be higher than I was accustomed to in order for my truck not to stutter. I also started getting a "Check engine" light from time to time. The code for the engine light was for overcharging although my voltage meter did not register anything I thought was unusual. The other day, when I started it to come home from work I noticed that the volt meter was at about 12v. The next morning when I started it, it was charging at about 15. That night when I started it to leave from work, not only was it not charging but the tach was bouncing around. Again, in the morning it was fine. My diagnosis is the power control module has a gremlin that prefers the cool of the morning to the heat of the afternoon. Am I right? If so where can I get one of these modules? The dealer network is backordered. The truck is a '95 4x4 2500 5-speed.

I was picking up some parts at my local Napa and saw a rebuilt PCM on the counter for a '97. All I know about it is said $250 core charge on it. I know the dealer doesn't give you $250 back. Before you go replacing it though I would check the connections for corrosion first especially if the plug has been removed and not put back together with dielectric grease. You might also want to check the condition of the connections/wire on the battery temp sensor located under the pass side battery. When they act up your charge voltage can jump around.
