Has anybody been towing with the PE, and what have you seen for EGT's. I am using the PE on level 1 towing 6K pounds. Since I don't have my gauges installed yet, I am curious what temps people have seen. Thanx...

Dave

Dave, I'll have some EGT temps while towing for you after this weekend. Got some EGT/Boost guages installed yesterday and couldn't get it over 1000 degrees (the exhaust is straight piped). I'll be hauling 3 of 4 horses to a roping down in Chatsworth and on the way home there's that grade up the 14 then I get on the 138. I've towed up this same grade without the RV injectors and the PE box with 2 horses and downshifted to 5th gear to keep my rpm over 2000 rpm, it felt like the engine was starting to lug in 6th doing 70-75. The 01 will easily run up to 3000 rpm no problem while my 95 is hard to get over 2500 rpm and runs fine right around 2000. Driving the same road with the 95 I never drop out of 5th and can't get my EGT's over 1100 if I try. I'll report back sometime Sunday with towing temps in level 3 unless for some reason that it's running too hot then maybe I'll drop down a level or two but I doubt it. Still need to see why it's not getting enough boost though, only 23 pounds when a few folks say it should be getting 30+.

Douglas Hatfield tows about the same amount of weight I think, he has done some towing with his PE, once he gets home from work I am sure he can provide numbers for you if he sees this post. He likes to poke around in Level I alot #ad

Hard acceleration in Level 1, or towing a 3000lb bass boat while in Level 1, the EGT in my truck doesn't go up too high. It probably will with a heavier load! But in Level 2, it WILL go up too high, towing or not, at sustained heavy throttle. You really, really need those gauges... even a stock truck really needs them...
If you need help obtaining gauges fast and cheap, I can email you my source for ISSPRO, but if price is not critical, AutoMeter is the way to go, better quality. Any help you need installing them, just any kind of help, let me know, I'll do what I can ! Just get them gauges on there ASAP !

Well Daveo I pull the exact same weight as you do when I pull my Jeep and trailer which is about 6000 lbs. When towing in level 1 with the PE it is hard to get over 1100 degrees, unless you hold your foot at wide open trottle up a long steep grade with your trailer. In level 1 I have yet to see EGT's get over 1100 degrees pre-turbo in about 300 miles of towing with it on, but I would not tow in level 2 or 3 without gauges as I have a few times to see how much of an increase in power from the stock ETH going up a steep hill with the trailer and the EGT's got over 1250 degrees real fast exspecially in level 3, but I have a 4" exhaust system coming soon so that should help in my EGT's. And even thou I have not got my EGT's over 1100 degrees in level 1 I would and so would everone else for that matter recommend that you get gauges so you can monitor the well being of your motor.

Dodge21, I ma not sure what may be wrong as I have seen 33 PSI a couple of times with the PE while playing around and for you KatDiesel I do drive in levels 2 and 3 with/or without the trailer, just not as often as level 1 as I am afraid I may blowup my little baby diesel motor.

Just got back from my weekend out. With the PE box on level 3 and towing about 8000 pounds the EGT's didn't get over 1200 degrees. Boost still only 23lbs or so. We're going to try changing the elbow and see if that has anything to do with it.

Kyle

Kyle,

ETC or ETH? My '01 doesn't have an elbow yet either. I would expect this to limit the boost/power. How did it tow in level 3? I haven't towed in 2 or 3 because I was worried about the EGT's. TIme for the gauges.

dodge021,

You say you have 275's, the PE on 3, straight piped exhaust, towing 8000lbs and see only 23psi boost and EGT's didn't get over 1200??? IMHO I think I would check that boost with another gauge . . . I have the 275's, PE (on 3 of course), stock exhaust and get 36psi boost and 1350 max EGT. You should actually get higher boost than mine, since you have a less restrictive exhaust (translates to turbine getting more work out of the exhaust gases). Also, have you tried just plugging the turbo to see if you could get more boost? But it sounds to me like your getting more boost than you're seeing on the gauge. That's my $0. 02 worth anyway. I hope it's something easy, but let us know what you find out.

OK I finally got my gauges installed (NOT the nice SPA's I wanted)this weekend.

EGT's NOT towing... .

Max boost Max EGT
Stock '01 auto 20psi 1000F

PE lvl 1 22psi 1200F

PE lvl 2 22psi 1200F

These are preliminary observations obtained by "bootin it" from a stop to 80mph. Did not try lvl 3 yet. It gets to 1200F quick, but seems to stabilize there, even when trying a couple of good grades @ 80mph. Now it's time to address the wastegate issue... . NEED MORE BOOST!!!

Can I adjust the wastegate linkage????

I have had the hot Edge for about a week now. Here are some of the temps I have seen:

Level 1 (Normal level 2) 32PSI, 1150 egt
Level 2 (Normal level 3) 38PSI, 1350 egt
Level 3 (1 higher than hot edge) 42PSI, will peg the egt meter.

I have the 275's and Walker muffler. This truck badly needs a 4" system.
