Fifth wheel hitch install??

vehicle ride

do any of you have experience towing after installing an EZ box without trans. mods? reliability is my main concern and think the power boost would be nice.

DIDN'T WORK FOR ME. TRIED IT WITH MY TRUCK AND IT SLIPPED IN OD WITHOUT A LOAD. GUESS I'M GOING TO HAVE TO UPGRADE THE TRANSMISSION.

I just made a pull to Talledega, it was the first pull with the EZ plugged in. I got 12 mpg and it did very good. I also did not see the trans temp get over 105 while on the interstate. Of course it got up to 150 while I was in traffic. I didnt hit any big hills like they have in the west but I was very proud of the way it worked with the engine and trans.

I drove I-55 to Jackson and then to I-20 to Birmingham. I held (70 mph) every hill except the last two right before Pell City. They were really steep and the traffic was starting to back up on the incline as I drove up the hill.

I try to be easy on the trans. When I am pulling the 5er I never get over 2k rpm till it locks up (3rd gear), get to 65 mph I put it in OD and let off the fuel peddle, just a little, till it locks up in 4th OD. Then I just bring it up to 70 mph. The outside temps were from 75 to 85.

I thought the trans did a fine job considering that it was seeing a load that it had never seen before. HP that is!

:) Friend of mine as an automatic in his truck. We did a test with his 5th wheel on hill out back that is called Parrot Mnt Road about 5 months ago. His truck is bone stock. Both runs were started at the steepest point mid way up the hill from a full stop. We looked for accelration and max speed we could pull. 5th wheel is 29ft and 9400 lbs in wt. with the results being that he could only get to 28 mph. Acceleration was poor. The transmission kept trying to shift up and then down. We slipped in my EZ and went back to the same spot and repeated the test over the same ground. This time top speed was 41 mph and the transmission was solid with no hunting. Exceleration was good but not as fast as we thought it would be. The top speed of 41 mph was a supprise. ;)

I'm not quite sure what the EZ is meant to do, but I have a Dunnrite (El Monte, Ca) modification and tow a 14K 32' Alpenlite. Tony did a great job. I crawl down 7% grades without an ex. brake with no problem. A bit of touching the brake peddle is minimum. I am so very satisfied with the installation. Hope this can answer a question.

98. 5, 5. 9, 2500 QC, DUNNRITE transmission, 60 Gallon Aero Tank from Corona Ca. Camping World Air Bags( Did not leak in 3 months) otherwise bone stock.

'01 32' Alpenlite Double Slide at 14K.

I installed an EZ in my 2000 when it was bone stock. The transmission slipped with just an EZ and a 1500 lb boat trailer, this is with 4. 10 gears. If reliability is your main concern, get a valve body upgrade at the minumum. If you are towing at or above the factory rating of 16000 combined(3. 54) you really should have internal upgrades done,as well as an upgraded TC. Bill K can tell you how to turn the line pressure up (1-866-504-4002)a few turns,if you are broke, but this isnt the cure, its a band -aid,bu it works.

Snowman, Thanks for the info but Tony at Dunnrite Transmissions (in the TDR) locked the TC in 2nd and 1st, and modified the valve body. I currently have 60k on the truck and the shifts are tight and snappy.

plntmgr, your welcome. I seen you were modified,I was replying to lizzyhermits post question about towing experiences with the EZ box,and reliabiltiy. :)

When I first got my 2000 3500 with the 4:10 I installed the VA box. I pulled my 34' fifth wheel to AZ, (3,000 miles round trip) When I got back the transmission was shuddering and slipping and the fluid smelled burnt. Took it to DTT and had the valve body and torque converter installed and haven't had any problems since.
