I'm about ready to order a PE EZ. I've searched the threads and this seems to be the right product for increasing HP/Torque for pulling a trailer. I'm not looking for the ultimate HP/Torque increase as I have a stock 5 speed and don't want to hammer the drive train.

Here is my question: Have any of you installed the EZ and not done the wastegate mod? I realize this will limit my boost to about 18-20psi, and may increase the egt, but if the wastegate is not modified, will it severely effect the HP/Torque that this product will produce? ...

Bomb Bug

Hi Rick,

I see you got the BOMB bug just like me!:D

My EZ that I ordered is supposed to be here tomorrow. Since I live right down the street from you, I would be more than happy to let you "borrow" it and take it for a test drive to see how you like it before you order it. I also have the BD Plug-N-Power that you can try as well & see which one you like better.

I have boost module and elbow installed on my truck already & I am seeing 35+ psi of boost. They are great to have with a box, but not required. The EZ includes a boost module, the BD PNP does not.

Let me know if you want to try one or both out!

Steve

Just installed the EZ, worked great. Towed my fifth and found I had to back out when on a hill because the EGT's were flying past 1200. Was told that the elbow would let me get to 27# of boost which was a design need of the EZ. Haven't towed since but I don't see the rapid buildup of temp. I'm now seeing a max of 28# boost. Steve, A boost module is required or an overboost code will be set even without modifying the wastgate.

And the newer PnP boxes do include a internal boost module too.

I installed my Edge EZ without the boost elbow as I have a hardline. I dynoed my truck and got 276 rwhp. since then I've installed a modified hardline wastegate actuator and have noticed an improved response and obviously more boost (34pis now).

I didn't have any temp problems towing 10k lbs before or after using a modified wastegate actuator.

EZ without Boost elbow

Rick I too installed my EZ without doing the elbow mod at first. I just HAD to try it out!!

I did have my gauges installed, so I was able to see the 19-20 psi max boost, and saw temps in the 1150-1200* range. I already had an Amsoil air filter installed.

Then, maybe a week later, I plugged the hardline, and drilled the relief hole in the line. I then got 28-30psi boost.

But more importantly I got a 150* drop in EGT's! Adding all that extra air really cools down the temps! At this point it was hard to get over 950-975*.

So you can run the EZ without the elbow mod, but you might find yourself having to lift the pedal a bit on long heavy climbs to control EGT's.

You will LOVE the EZ. It's contagious!!

Have fun, Greg L

Thanks for the info

Lots of good information... . Thanks... .

The reason I'm wondering about the wastegate mod is that I don't want to take a chance on invalidating the warranty... Have seen some info on using a "turnbuckle" to lock the wastegate out, which could be removed, if needed... My understanding of the elbow mod and others is that they can't easily be removed for service work. Also seen some info on a "hardline" wastegate, but don't really know what their talking about... .

The Hardline

Rick, since your signature shows you have a 5spd trans, you do not have the hard line, you have the little elbow and short piece of tubing connecting the outlet of the turbo to the wastegate actuator.

On the automatic 01 and up engines [I think that is right] the turbo is a smaller HY35-9 model, and the connection from the turbo outlet to the wastegate actuator is a single bent piece of steel tubing or a hard elbow, there is no rubber tubing. Hence the name Hardline.

Both of the mods to the elbows could be detected, but the mod to your style turbo would be easiest to reverse [just reinstall the original factory one. ]

But I believe the extra boost and lower EGT's are worth the mod.

If you are really concerned about tampering with the turbo, at least monitor your EGT's when you install the EZ box.

You'll really like the EZ!! Power is addictive!!

Greg

Thanks for the info... I was wondering why some 2001 had this "hardline" elbow and others didn't... Didn't think about A/T's.

I'll take a look at this and see how hard it would be to change back and forth if needed.

I have the EGT gauge and others, so I'll be able to monitor that. I was just wondering if you got more actual power with the wastegate mod or if it was just an EGT thing... ;)

Power without the extra boost

Rick, I think there was some improvement in power when I did the mod to the boost elbow, but it was slight. The biggest improvement was just the box.

Good Luck, Greg L

Just brought the 5ver home from the shop yesterday. With the EZ, boost elbow, BHAF and 4" exhaust, we're running 30 PSI boost and can't seem to drive EGT's over 1000-1050 degF when towing - stock (22 PSI boost), I've seen 1250 degF EGT towing the 5ver in the Texas Hill Country.

The timing feature of the EZ (advances injection timing) would tend to drop EGT's from stock, but the additional fueling feature would tend to increase them. If you're only running 17 PSI max boost, I guess it would depend where your jumper was set as to what the overall effect on EGT's would be.

Hey Rick, try this to remove your rubber hose from boost elbow:

7/16 open end wrench slid around under the clamp, and pull gently. My rubber line came right off without disturbing the clamp at all. Save your factroy boost elbow and put it back in with you need service. By the way the 7/16 wrench is what I used to unscrew the Boost elbow.
