I've been chasing what we thought was an FCA problem.

the symptoms have changed a bit but here's what happens now;

towing a light load, maybe 8k, i get the RPMs up to about 2500 and there is an abrupt loss of power, a squeal and a massive puff of white smoke.

Then i upshift and the power feels normal again back up to 2500.

The only other symptom is stalling after startup when cold. That's what led us to the FCA.

Otherwise the truck runs normally, towing the load was effortless until i got on the highway.

I had a bunch of symptoms that pointed to the FCA. A new FCA fixed it a little but I still had similar symptoms. I explained my situation to Genos and I wondered if i might have gotten a bad FCA, they agreed that might be possible and overnighted me another one (i was supposed to be on the road tonight)

Meanwhile, I have the lift pump on the filter housing and in the course of all this that failed as well. Today both items came and I changed both.

The truck runs much better, I can mash the pedal and it goes right to redline (unloaded) but towing it cuts out at 2500.

Codes are P0269, P0268 and P2509 but I had the lift pump fail before i replaced it and I did not clear the codes, that may have already been there.

Need some stats on your truck year, miles , original injectors? A rail pressure gauge would be helpful right now

I had the exact thing happen after I installed a new lift pump a long time ago. Turns out I didn't put Teflon tape on one fitting and under hard throttle it would suck air into the line causing a big cloud of white smoke and loss of power.
