I wrote previously about intermittent power loss on my 95 stock w/5spd. Sometimes, the engine has to crank for 5-10 seconds before it starts, then it shows no turbo boost, and has little power. If I turn the motor off, and restart, usually it starts in less than 1 second, and has lots of boost/normal power. I have replaced the lift pump, overflow valve, fuel line, and am wondering if it could be the turbo or the turbo actuator? any thoughts helpful, thanks, glenn

Is it smoking heavy black when it has no boost and power? Are the EGT's high? If it is it could be a boost problem, otherwise I would guess that it is not getting enough fuel. Post some more info, smoke amounts and color would help a ton.

I would check the shutdown solenoid on the rear back side of the injection pump. This is what controls the shut off of fuel to the injection pump (engine shutdown). I would suspect there is a possibility the solenoid linkage is no retracting completely on every start, thus restricting fuel to the injection pump (loss of power). The next time the truck acts up, don't shut it down, get out and see if you can retract manually the solenoid linkage and then drive the truck to see if it was the problem. DBR

Roger on the shutdown solenoid

Just did mine. Intermitent problem. Email me if you need one. Local shop has em cheap.

Re: Roger on the shutdown solenoid

Just checked my solenoid, I touched it and it fell apart, seems to be missing a few pieces too. 2 price quotes from local 5 star dealers, $250 and $444. If your dealer can beat that, I would like to call him ASAP. My truck is running on a shoestring-literally, I tied the connector up, It is embarrassing to have to open the hood, untie the shoestring and shut the engine off. But what the heck, 487,000 miles I should replace it. Thanks. :D

shutoff solenoid

Thanks DBR, it appears your call was right on the money, replaced solenoid and havent had a recurrence of the problem. Also thanks to BGDummy for saving me $110 by steering me to the right place to buy the solenoid. :D
