OK, I know you've been over this a million times but I need input.

"POWER LOSS"

History: Purchased 3\00 w\72K.

Ran great, when rpms hit 1500 you could feel the turbo spool up & the truck "leap" forward.

In aug. the muffler started rattling so instead of replacing it I removed it & added a straight pipe behind the cat. Three days later I changed the oil & filters. (oil & fuel (Fleet Guard)). Soon after I lost my power from 1500-2500 rpm, when the tack hits 1500 there's no surge, just a steady, slow acceleration. I've cleanned the pre screen filter & checked for inter cooler leaks & changed the fuel filter again, to no avail. The truck runs great off the line and after 2500 rpm. No missing, no smoke. Pulls a load as long as I keep the rpms up. But, if I'm on an incline and let the rpms drop to 2200 I'll never get it back.

Now, I know I need more diognostics and my boost, fuel pressure and pyro guages are in route, to be installed ASAP. But in the mean time I thought I'd ask the people that have been through this.

Thanks in addvance, & feel free to e-mail me.

Gene Earl

PS I now have 85K on the truck

Sounds like you have either a boost leak, or you have a broken tube/hose that supplies boost to the pump aneroid mechanism. This attaches to the back of the pump, and some of them have a rigid tube that runs over to the turbo side, as well. That tube sometimes cracks and then snaps in two, letting the boost signal all escape, and the pump never sees it.

There's a flexible tube that runs from teh manifold to the pump, and possibly (most years) a short rubber hose that runs from the back of the pump to the rigid tube that is clamped to the injector lines and runs over toward the turbo.

Also, the wastegate actuator could fail, making it loose the boost signal.

Suggestions, at least. Hope this points you in the right direction.

Gene,it could be that your wastegate isn't working right. Could be that the small tube to the actuator is cracked or loose, maybe happened when changeing the oil filter? You'll know more once you have your boost gauge installed.

Here's an update, While I was waiting for your input I decided to disconect the waste gate actuator hose. I did so & plugged it off & took a test drive, liked to snapped my neck, so, if I disconected the waste gate actuator and my acceleration is back, can I assume that is the problem? Can I run with it disconected? (my engine is stock). Is it covered under engine waranty? There is a TSB (#11-08-98) about the waste gate actuator but I can't find out what is says. Anybody know?

Thanks again

Gene Earl.

MuddFlap,
I don't know the answer to your warranty question. If it IS covered under warranty then definately get it fixed properly! I wouldn't show up to the dealership with it unhooked either! BUT, if your fueling is stock or near stock you CAN run with it disconnected without worry.

Best of luck to you,
Chris

Thank you gentlemen for your input, let me just re-ask a part of my last post:

"if I disconected the waste gate actuator and my acceleration is back, can I assume that is the problem?"

I found it, I found it!!!!!

I attached an air hose w\20 psi to the actuator hose & I'll be darned if I didn't hear air leaking. It's coming from the actuator itself so I guess the diaphram is leaking. Now to find out if it's a waranty job or not and if not how big a dent an actuator will put in my piggy bank.

Thanks everybody, next six pack is on me. #ad

Gene,if warrenty doesn't cover it then I'd think about a larger turbo housing, most come with the wastegate assembily. Come to think about it I have two assembiles that you,or anyone else can have for free.

Let Me add a postscript.

I called two dealerships in my area about replacing the actuator. #1 said, "Ahhh, I ahhh, My computers new and I ahh, Maybe, But I Ahh. " Get my drift.

#2. The nice Folks at James O'Neal Dodge in Breman, Ga. (where I bought my truck) Said, "Yeah No Problem, That's a waranty item, bring it in and We'll get it changed out for you brother.

Guess where my appointment is on Monday.

Once again, Thanks to everyone for your help and especially Bill Illflem for his offer of an Actuator.
