Hello all I have a problem with my truck and I don't know what else to do. After of 4 hours of pulling non-stop the truck seems to starve for fuel. The further you mash the pedal the worse it runs. There seems to be a certain place in the throttle that it will pickup and run fair, running fair I mean 55 or 60 with a load and that is it. After she cools down or sits till morning it seems to run fine. I have changed fuel filter, lift pump, and just installed 275 injectors. Now this problem just didn't happen overnight it been going on for awhile. I have changed a little something each trip to try to find the problem but no luck. Just had a new auto transmission and a inexpensive pedal position sensor changed also. One other question! What can I do or what is the best way rather to beef up my transmission to keep the torque converter unlocked while pulling. All I have is a stock rebuilt transmission with pump pressure turned up. I don't pull extremely heavy loads or abuse. I am preparing to put a Edge EZ on it, but I don't wont to have build another trans!! Would greatly appreciate your thoughts and help.

Try cooling down the VP44 next time it is running sorry, see if it does not put the power back in it. I would pour water over it, a full 5 gallons minimum and pour kinda slow so the water has a chance to pull the heat out of the pump.

cool the pump!

DON'T DUMP WATER ON YOUR INJ. PUMP! the thermal shockfrom dumping water on it will warp and/or crack it ! also it could mess up the electronics inside. what happens when you are taking a nice hot shower and the hot water goes away? You scream like a girl and try to get out of the path of the water. the same thing happend with your pump, but it can't go anywhere.

So if we were to hit a big puddle it would warp and crack the pump? The elecctronics are sealed, and we are talking water at zero pressure. I don't buy it, not at any price. Start slow and continue slowly pouring, it is not going to hurt a thing. This has been done and has identified pump problems very much like the original poster is experiencing. Try a search... .....

cooling the pump

There is a difference between hitting a puddle and dumping water on the engine! There is not that much water that actually makes it to the inj. pump when you hit a puddle. Big difference from dumping a 5 gal. bucket on it, If the pump cannot cause fuel starvation just because it is hot. It will get hot if it is being starved by the lift pump ( no lubricating and cooling fuel flow) the pump is fuel cooled. there is a possibility that your lift pump is putting out enough to not cause a driveability issue until the pump gets hot. Just my. 02, but I would check your lift pump press .

water heat

How hot do you think the injection pump gets?? It's not all that hot to were it would warp it. They are sealed completely and I have had a few apart at the dealer I work at and it wouldn’t cause any concerns pouring water on it. It’s not like putting it on an hot exhaust manifold or in an engine that ran out of water and then put cold water back in it. What are we worried about warping I could see if it was around 400 + degrees and threw cold water on it but it’s not even close. That is funny what happens when you’re driving and a hell of a storm hits you and it is a down poor you don’t think that much water makes it to the pump?? Next time you run into a quick storm pull over and check your motor and see how wet it is I have and not going to tell why!!!! Just not losing fuel pressure causes pump heat problems but is the number one cause but not the only one, just what I have seen and herd from other mechanics.
