My son in law has an '08 and one half of the power door mirrors doesn't work. Before we dismantle anything, is there a preferred "check this first"? The door switch, or the control motor in the mirror itself?

Check the switch first, mine have been giving me some trouble from having moisture on them when the window is down a little, I clean them, dry them and it works again.

Like others have said, check/clean the master panel switch first and plug, but then ALSO carefully inspect the wires that run from the door controls to the door INSIDE of the black rubber loom.
IIRC, You need to pull the loom back from the pillar side of the plug` and then CAREFULLY inspect and even PALPATE each wire. Sometimes the break will be obvious, but other times, there wire can be broken UNDERNEATH the insulation and you can't see it, but you can FEEL it as hard, brittle spot where it is failing from wire fatigue. At least that is what happened to mine.

My first guess would be broken wires where the door hinges are. :(
That's my second place to look, the switch is by far the easiest place to start, the 08's don't seem to have a problem with the door wiring (now that I said it I better be ready to fix my own wires in the doors.)
It's a crap shoot, but with an ohm meter you can check the switch out in about 1 min. then chase it from there.
so it's your choice start where you think it might be, and if you have had problems with your wiring in the door area start there by all means.
