Power / momentum loss at cruise

I have a 93, club cab 4x4 with an automatic trans. While in cruise this weekend the engine revved up as if it was put into neutral (it was not), and the speedometer immediately went to 0 mph. Then a few moments later, it would come back to normal operating power and engagement of the drivetrain. No modifications have been done on the engine or transmission.

Any help / ideas for troubleshooting would be appreciated.

It probably lost VSS signal which dropped OD.

Bear with me, what is a lost VSS signal ? And by dropped OD, do you mean overdrive ? Any hints on how to troubleshoot this problem ?

VSS, vehicle speed sensor and yes OD means over drive
