Engine/Transmission (1998.5 - 2002) VP44 Question

2nd Gen Non-Engine/Transmission PSC steering box question

I have a AGR Super Pump power steering pump and AGR power steering gear box. The fluid is Red Line synthetic. I'm not totally sold on the quality of either of these parts. The gear box seems more sloppy than the OEM unit.

I had an issue the other day when it was about 90 degrees while towing where the power steering assist faded. Usually, I can easily turn my wheel from lock to lock on dry pavement with ease. The other day when I pulled into my driveway the wheel was just about impossible to turn. I had noticed the fade while on the road as well.

I checked my fluid level and it was OK but the reservoir seemed extremely hot. After the truck cooled off the steering was fine again. I wondering if the AGR pump is making more heat than the factory unit. I know some trucks came equipped with a cooler but mine did not.

Has anyone had good luck with any after market PS coolers? I'm thinking I need to do something ASAP before I burn something up.

I haven't personally used any AGR products. I have a PSC pump and box on my '01. If all your steering linkages and track bar are tight, you may need to adjust the preload of the worm gear into the pinion gear in your steering box.

I have no experience with the Red Line fluid, but I wouldn't spend my money on it.

In the past, I've used small transmission coolers (about 5x11") to keep my ram assisted power steering setups cool. Plumb it into the return side of the circuit and make sure that it will recieve some airflow when the truck is running.
