I have a '98 24v 2500 2WD. My power steering always groans in cold weather ... . just like many people that have posted on this site. Recently, the truck didn't want to turn as I was pulling out of my parking spot. The system made a 'pop' sound and then it turned OK. However, when I got to the corner, there was no steering boost and I could hardly turn the wheel. During the drive home, there was various levels of power steering boost available. When I got home, there was evidence that the fluid had been forced out of the reservoir, so I check the fluid level and it seemed a little low. I sucked out the remaining fluid in the reservoir and then refilled with new fluid. It now groans even more than before and the fluid started foaming as soon as I turn the steering wheel. Once I turn the wheel even a little bit, I can see bubbling in the reservoir.

Any suggestions as to where to start looking? I assume I now have air in the system ... . If I replace the fluid with synthetic, will that stop the foaming?

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you can get the front wheels up off the ground fill the power steering resivour up and turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few time check the fluid level and start the engine a turn the steering wheel lock to lock a few times don't hold it at the locks. Then check the fluid level again if it is low add and repeat if it is good lower the truck and start the engine and turn the steering wheel you should have power steering at this time from lock to lock a few times checking the fluid level often.

Valvoline syn.

PS fluid may help. I have used it and have seen a few post from others who have foaming and cold weather problems. Mine is a foaming problem. I think servicing to the proper level is important. Do not overfill.
