Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) need more power

Other than the newly developed leak that I got in my vacuum/power sttering pump, I've been having an intermittent problem with the power steering on my 2001. 5 pretty much since day one.

What happens is that when it's cold (i. e. near or below freezing), even if I let it idle, it occasionaly acts as if the power steering pump is not there. This happens right after startup, I start the truck, put it in gear, start to move, turn the wheel, apply 50 pounds of steering force for three seconds, then all of a sudden the power steering pump decides to show up for work. After this initial problem, it works fine. I've checked fluid levels, etc... ideas?

power steering

Do a search on power steering, there are a number of fixs from changing the P. S. oil to a clogged screen in the pump.

Mine was doing the same thing, it turned out to be the screen was clogged.

I used Valvoline Syn Tec P. S. oil and the steering is better than when new.

My screen didn't appear clogged, but lengthening the spring and reinstalling new synth fluid added assist power to my steering.

I can attest to the fact (as I posted in the Texas Diesel thread) that putting in the flow piston backwards shuts the pump down completely. I'm sure that if it is sticking in the barrel then it would do the same thing. Other that the pump vane and shaft, it is the only moving part in the pump that I can think of that could cause an intermittent problem.

Thanks for the info guys! I ordered a seal kit from www.fixinrams.com (BTW that's the way to go if you need to do this job - very helpful), so when I have all that apart I'll dive into the PS pump and see what I got. I'll post if I find anything.
