ATF4 instead of power steering fluid???
ATF+4 is indeed the correct power steering fluid for your truck. If you buy a pint bottle of "Mopar Power Steering Fluid" at a dealership, what you're actually buying is an overpriced relabeled bottle containing ATF+4!
The following is a quote from a
2010 article in Mopar Magazine:
Fluid Selection: Power Steering & Brake Fluids
Selecting the correct fluid for late-model vehicles isn’t as simple as grabbing a can
off the shelf. Carmakers work with oil and additive companies to design lubricants specifically tailored to meet and maintain fluidity demands and compatibility requirements of several vehicle components for their entire product line of vehicles. Mopar® offers four (4) Chrysler Group LLC-approved power steering/hydraulic fluids and two (2) brake/clutch fluids designed specifically for all Chrysler, Jeep®, Dodge, Ram, Plymouth and Eagle vehicles.
POWER STEERING FLUID
Power steering fluid is a hydraulic oil that is designed to be compatible with rubber hoses and seals in the power steering system. Always use the type of fluid
recommended by the vehicle manufacturer, as shown in the Owner’s Manual. Never mix fluids. Use of an incorrect (non-compatible) fluid can destroy rubber seals and hoses and cause system failure.
Automatic transmission fluid used to be a common fluid for power steering systems, but most manufacturers today call for their own special fluids. For example 2005–2010 Jeep Grand Cherokee and 2006–2010 Jeep Commander vehicles require Mopar Hydraulic System Power Steering Fluid, Part No. 05142893AA meeting MS-10838. And, the Chrysler Crossfire and Chrysler Aspen/Dodge Durango (hybrid-electric powered only) require Mopar Hydraulic Fluid, Part No. 05127381AA meeting MS-11655.
Chrysler Group continues to recommend Mopar Power Steering Fluid, Part No. 04883077 meeting MS-5931 for pre-1998 Chrysler Group vehicles. For 1998 and later vehicles, Chrysler specifies Mopar Power Steering Fluid +4, Part No. 05166226AA (or Mopar ATF+4®), meeting MS-9602. Note: 1998–2001 vehicles delivered from the factory with MS-9933 power steering fluid should use ATF+4 (replaces MS-9933). Do not mix fluids. ATF+4 should not be used to top off systems requiring MS-5931.
Chrysler Group does not list a change interval for most power steering systems. However, some systems require services when the vehicle is operated under extreme driving conditions. For example, for 1998–2004 Chrysler Concorde, Chrysler LHS, Chrysler 300M, Dodge Intrepid and Eagle Vision (LH Body) severe service applications (see Owner’s Manual), replace the power steering fluid every 60,000 miles. Use Mopar Power Steering Fluid +4, Part No. 05166226AA meeting MS-9602.
BRAKE FLUID
Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid with a high boiling point. Used in hydraulic brake and clutch applications for automotive applications, these fluids use hydraulic pressure to operate their respective systems. The fluids are classified by the U. S. Department of Transportation (DOT) under their own ratings, such as DOT 3, DOT 4 or DOT 5 grades. The main difference among them is the boiling point. Almost all carmakers specify either DOT 3 or DOT 4.
Chrysler Group vehicles are filled with either DOT 3 or DOT 4 brake fluid. DOT 4 fluids are for high-performance applications and as a result have a higher boiling point. DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids are compatible and therefore can be mixed; however, the boiling point of the fluid will be compromised compared to operating with an unaltered DOT 4. DOT 3 and DOT 4 fluids (glycol-based) are not compatible with DOT 5 (silicone-based) brake fluids.
Brake fluids break down over time as water vapor will accumulate or moisture will enter the brake system through hoses and seals. Under the heat caused by braking, moisture in a braking system can boil into a compressible vapor, resulting in brake failure. As a
result it is a good practice to change the brake fluid every two years. Furthermore, Chrysler Group recommends the brake fluid be replaced for some models operated under certain extreme driving conditions. For example, for 2001–2010 Chrysler PT Cruiser trailer towing applications, change the brake fluid every 48,000 miles. Use Mopar Brake Fluid DOT 3 Motor Vehicle, Part No. 04318081AB meeting MS-4574.
