When temps get around 30* my power steering doesn't work right after starting engine until it starts to warm up. Would a fluid change help this problem? What is the best type of fluid to use in the power steering unit?
Will changing the fluid help. Probably not. But it doesn't hurt to try it. Your only looking at a quart or two.
Mine will be stiff for the first turn of the wheel. Then it will be all right after that. I have seen this trait with Dodge cars and trucks over the years. The first one I had this little anoying problem on was a 71 Challenger. (I won't list the rest). But most Dodges I have owned turn the wheel before you move. That way you won't be suprised when you make your first hard turn and do not have power assist.
I have seen that trait before, but it is usually on rigs that use Rack & Pinion style steering. On those if you look in the fluid reservoir it will look milky that is from aluminum wear particles and the fix would be a new rack. I'm guessing the same could cause what you are experiencing and that is wear that allows an internally pressure leak that goes away when it warms up. The fix would be a new or rebuilt steering box.
The manual also suggests: low fluid level, loose belt, low pump pressure, or internal leak in steering gear
When I first bought mine ('94) the same thing happened during the cold weather. At the time I looked it up in either the owners manual or the service manual and it said that this is normal. Now when the cold weather sets in and I start it up cold I just blip the throttle and its fine
