I have a 97 3500 4X4 with p/s pump failure. The pump drive shaft snapped while in 4X during a recenct bad weather condition. I relplaced the P/S pump with a reman. one. Bled out all air, broke AGAIN during steering cycling. Answers or suggestions? Know where I can get a HD P/S pump.

Thanks

Have you put the front end on jack stands and had and assistant rotate the steering wheel with the key on and engine off, do you see binding? Are the steering stops broken or missing? (too much travel).

Maybe just a dud reman pump? Try A-1 carbone (nat'l rebuilder) or quality reman unit from your local shop, auto parts store etc.

There is a "L" shaped gusset from a ps pump stud to the engine block, it is there for a reason, make sure its not missing.

Good luck

Andy, Thanks for your reply. I would have replied sooner if not for regular work interfering with my 'Truck-Time'! After some unusual prayers, I got another reman pump and did it all over again w/o any problems. I feel that the cold weather, cold truck and extreme load was the original prob. and then it was a bad reman part. I did do all above, and all is in place only some sloppyness comming from the steering box Any comments? Other than that works fine now. Thanks for your help.

Perform the TSB for steering wander (leave the gear on the truck). Do the pre-load, then overcenter adj. TSB 19-10-97, go to the dogeram.org site it has pictures! :)

The Luke's link track bar repair kit or DTT track bar kit and Darin's Steering Stabilizer (DSS) do wonders in tight road feel.

Never hurts to ck. the tie-rod, drag link etc. These truck also like some caster (3. 0 deg or so). Have you seen the infamous "Brent Alignment" specs. ? They work!

Good luck

Andy

Cross Camber 0. 0

Toe - standard specs, (maybe a little out if you tow a lot, they will pull in as the front end lifts up).
