My 2002 w/ 40k is leaking power steering fluid. Before the 36k warranty was up I went in with wandering problems, and the steering gear box was replaced. A few days later i noticed the P. S. pump leaking. The bottom half of the pump (front and back) is wet and covered in fluid. Is this something that I can put new seals in, or does the entire assembly need to be replaced? Could they have caused the problem by removing the hydraulic hoses, and not reinstalling them correctly? I just looked at the service manual, but could not find a breakdown of the pump.

Thanks

I would try to get the dealer to replace it under the 100k mi. engine warranty.

Are you sure it is power steering fluid and not engine oil? There is an oil seal between the power steering pump and the vacuum pump that is notorious for leaking and some have gotten the pumps replaced under warranty. You can do a search on vacuum pump seal and find lots of info.

Basically, there are no (authorized) service parts for either the vac. or p. s. pump but the oil seal is a standard seal that can be obtained from NAPA and other sources and you can replace the seal yourself (you need to have access to a hydraulic press).

It is ps fluid.

After a long trip (4+ hours) it will be low on fluid and I have to fill it up before I can turn the wheel at a sitting idle. I can drive it for weeks on short trips, before it needs to be filled, but one long drive and it will be low. If I cannot get more info on how to fix it, I am going to take it back to the service dept that did the work. I called them as soon as I noticed it and told them to make a note. Problem is they are 1. 5hrs away and I would have to leave it there.

Thanks

Make sure you

check the power steering lines I have had leaks in both the pressure and return lines. I would have the dealer put dye in the PS system and check it with a black light to see where its coming from. I just went through the same thing and it turned out to be the PS return line had a hole in it.
