2005 dodge 2500/ 5. 9 turbo diesel: The power steering pump reservoir ejects oil out on top of reservoir when cap is removed. ( with engine off ) Is this normal? Is reservoir under

pressure ?

Thanks for any input.

The reservoir should not be under pressure, there have been reports on the forums about blowing the cap off and leaking fluid at the cap, etc. The problem could be the accumulator at the brake booster which is charged with nitrogen. To check the accumulator you should start the truck, shut it off and you should have brake assist for two strokes on the brake pedal with engine off. . bg

Someone posted a while back that Dodge changed the caps to being vented so it appears that in of itself, the existence of pressure in the reservoir isn't necessarily a failure. So as long as your accumulator is OK you can either replace the cap or drill a tiny vent hole in it.

The reservoir is on the high side of the pump. Any air in the system should accumulate at the cap. There should be no pressure in the system other than a small amount from expansion. Blowing fluid out once the cap is released means something is pressuring the fluid up against the cap to cause that. Likely problem would be the hydro-boost system failure.

Mine always popped the cap off as if there was a hint of pressure in the res. I know some vehicles are like that. Been that way from new.

I have had an ongoing issue with pressure in the power steering reservoir and it is very common. I referenced multiple threads on this issue and the solution that appears to resolve the problem seems to be a homemade fix, not the new redesigned cap from dodge. Here is a thread discussing this: http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/3...6051-pressurized-power-steering-cap-part.html
My cap looks like the newest one and I still get a pop of pressure when I take the cap off. Fortunately, I am not losing fluid from the cap; unfortunately, I am losing fluid inside the cab where the brake pedal goes into the brake booster. However, I have still not done anything to it as I understand it is common and the leak is not that bad.

I lost one and put another one on an lost it too. Found it caught in the frame below. I put it back on tight but it still leaked so I backed it off a little so it still holds but doesn't leak. Shad
