I have a 90 W250 and want to know if anybody knows how hard it is to change the power steering pump. I just had a failure and the only place that I could find to replace it was a dealer and they made it sound like it was a major job and they were doing me a favor by doing it. Has anybody done this job and could you let me know what steps were required to complete it. e-mail @ -- email address removed -- thanks Laird Calder

I have never replaced the pump but I have tried to remove it to replace the lower vacuum pump. You will need a special flex socket to get the bottom 15 mm bolt due to how tight it is. I've also never gotten the cluster of pumps out of the frame of the truck. It must be one of those trick puzzles... I would suggest taking off the vacuum pump on the side of the cluster to get it out. The service manual then states that you make a rod to push the pump off the gear. It is a long job but not impossible. Those guys seem to only want to work on easy high paying jobs. They will earn their money on this one.
