Need some help on this problem

Hello, guys. I am on a road trip using a makeshift cap for the power steering reservoir. The actual cap must have come off. This is the second time I’ve lost one in about 3 years. I thought there was a thread explaining what causes the cap to blow off but I couldn’t find it. Any thoughts on what causes this?

An Oreilly near us is supposed to have a replacement cap in the Help (Dorman) brand so I’m going to buy at least a few of those tomorrow, Lord willing.

Put a tether on the new one. Take some epoxy, and some braided picture wire, to make the tether. You'll be able to use un-insulated wire connectors to make the loops for fastening. Could possibly even drill small hole and pop rivet it to the cap. Hope this sparks the ideas that will work for you. Good luck.

Never had a problem within 300k M. with mine, keep the level one finger wide under the Max also resolves the problem with the spilling ATF. There is totally no benefit from overfilling that little system.
ATF expands quite some if hot and the PS gets really hot.

I had this issue after upgrading to the 2008+ steering and the larger 6 bolt steering box. I fortunately always found the cap in the engine bay but purchased a spare just in case. The problem went away when I upgraded my 2006 power steering unit to a gently used power steering unit out of a 2009 truck.

I had an issue with the pressure building up and my brakes coming on slightly - brake lights would stay on when stopped (in park, foot off break pedal). I solved the issue by drilling out (every so slightly) the vent hole in the cap, if I remember correctly. Solved my problem. However, I never had one blow off. That seems like very excessive pressure.
