Duramax in 57 Chevy??

A question for Gehl skid steer techs out there.

A friend of mine has an 01 ford diesel.

It runs good once warmed up, but has some serious cold start issues. It really acts like it is getting air in the fuel system. It will crank right up after it sits overnight, but if you try to drive off it will soon lose power and die. It will restart, but with lots of blue/white smoke and no power.

If you let it idle for a few minutes it will run out fine and never stumble.

Anyone have an idea where I should start looking?

first off well... its a furd!:-laf the injection runs BOTH on fuel pump and oil pressure booster. that is one of the major stumbling blocks of the pstroke. if the oil isn't steady it wont run for beans. does he use his block warmer? try a thinner oil? do they have a check valve, if so is it stuck? my $. 02:)

Shouldn't need a block warmer. It's been 80 degrees. :)
When I say cold start, I just mean after it sits overnight. It will start and work fine once it gets over this little spell. I'm thinking some some sort of air leak, I just am not sure where to look.
I wouldn't think glow plugs either, because it starts instantly and will idle fine. Just don't try to go anywhere right away.
