Fixing the AC

I friend of mine has a 2001 Powerstroke with automatic transmission. He asked me what he can do to get some more power out of it, so I told him I would do a little research. I said the first thing he needs is to get some gauges so he knows what's happening with other mods.

Anyway, what can he do - in the correct order of perference - to his truck to get more power?

Thanks,

Blake

I would install a straight pipe/larger exhaust, Modified air filtration system of his choice, computer chip, then a set of big injectors. The injectors would be last seeing how they are $2500-$3000 for a set. BTW, if it doesn't have an intercooler (old body style) install one.

John

How to BOMB a powerstroke:

1) Disconnect intercooler to intake hose.

2) Drop large stick dynamite into intake

3) detonate at will

HEHE-- just teasing. I would say that a p-stroke needs all the simple air mods (intake, exhaust) and then fuel. Try that hypertech programmer or whatever they call it. Tell hmi to cash in his life insurance for the injectors! They are BIG$$.

For that much, a CTD can give lots of smiles.

Eric, Got Juice has a Duramax... ;)

Anyways, anything more than a 50HP chip in a Ford will kill the transmission. I see it all the time, day in, day out. I've turned up a few PSD's to nearly 400HP, and it gets spendy. Turbo upgrades, injectors, transmissions... It gets over eight grand really fast, for only 400HP.

Gauges, exhaust, intake, and a mild chip will make the '01 PSD into an entirely different machine. :)

From the little ive been able to dig up. After 400 it becomes exponentially more expensive to get the big #s. Cummins boys are lucky, In that they dont need to do much in the way of internal work. The psd runs into problems right off the bat with the valve springs. And it goes on from there. Weak # 8 casting. I think the later 7. 3s were great engines. But if you want to bomb the hell out of something. You better start with a good base. The cummins is much more tolerant of the abuse.

One more thing, watch out if you are going over 325 HP on a post 10-00 engine. After October of 2000, International started to use powdered metal rods in the T444E/PSD, instead of the tougher forged rods. The PM rods tend to tweak themselves at higher HP levels.

Thanks guys for your help. I'll pass it along to the guy at work with the Ford.

Another question... where do guys generally put their pyro probes for their EGT gauges? How much boost do those engines run?

Thanks.

Not much, as a buddy of mine had his turbo replaced and the mechanic said he "bumped" the boost up to 16. I have yet to find out what stock is. I've heard as low as 4psi, but that might have been the maxipad.

Just FYI:

Had our new-to-us 2001 PowerSmoke emission tested in colorado springs (Exhaust Readers on North Nevada).

215rwhp/540rwtq

It is stock from what I can tell, except for a k&n air filter. Seemed to be decent numbers for stock. Big truck to move though, 4x4 CC F250 ShortBed.

Oh, why? Because it has a real back seat. Else I wouldn't have touched it. Also, we paid way too much for the used one (kbb and nada wholesale, but how much credit can you give these numbers?), but I refused to consider the 6. 0 since it is still getting wrung out.

It's the wife's truck - my 1992 Ram is still what I want to drive!
later,
jon

The 7. 3's run 15-16psi stock. This can change a little with intake and exhaust work but not much. I ran my EGT probe in one of the exhaust manifolds. They use to make a probe you strapped on with a large radiator type hose clamp. I never had a problem with it. 4psi wouldn't even begin to move one of those trucks out of its own way... wouldn't move a Cummins either. . stock around 20psi to get the same HP out a smaller engine... CJ

$8 grand for 400HP? I haven't spent but a few grand and am putting more than that down on #2 only! Dyno sheets to prove it.

First thing yep gauges. Second, I have seen very minimal power gains from any exhaust system on the PSDs, but it sure helps in dropping the EGTs. Next I would add a good air cleaner like the AFE for some more airflow. Then I would get either a TS Performance or TTS chip. That will really wake the truck up.

I recommend a Trans-go shift kit and additional transmission coolers even on a stock truck.

Actually, those rods are junk once you add a 4-way chip, and a better convertor.

had a customer who had a 4way chip, and a little propane. Worked great untill he got a transmission that would transfer the power, and then it bent a rod on the test run.

The power stroke is a TOTALLY different animal then the Cummins. We are lucky enough to have one of the fastest powerstrokes in the country at the moment. :)

trying to bomb a powderedfluff is a waste of time. but with just a chip those trucks are light and will fly even though they have a big back seat. All i can say is that it needs more room than what it has to put the 82 extra horses in there to catch up to my stock horses. :p

Hey evan. Ive been curious about the powdered metal. Have you guys seen more failures with powdered cons. Its been debated hotly and they cant see straight enough to tell me. A man with a little metallurgy experience said that technically they are a harder metal. So they should do as well as the forged. I thought maybe it was like the alluminum head thing. It sounds bad so it must be. Turns out aluminum heads work just fine. Who knew. In fact someone posted that the new 6. 0s head is a two piecer. Half aluminum. Half iron. Dont tell the ford boys tho. Until I see it for myself Im not going to mention it to them.

Hey tdkid how many miles were on the truck your speaking of. Ive been curious as hell about this subject. But try to get a straight answer out of the ford boys. They rag on anyone who speaks out against ford. So that eventually nobody does.

He had about 25k. There are others besides him, that I can name off the top of my head that had the same thing happen to them, in a different way. Look at Frank(TooFast), just happen to him 2 weeks ago. Those rods are junk IMHO.
